Book Description

An original Gently novel on which the prime-time BBC series starring Martin Shaw is based.

Product Description

Having been invited to spend Christmas in the country, fishing for pike, Gently finds himself hunting a completely different predator when a guest at Merely Hall, a nearby stately home, is found dead at the foot of the grand staircase on Christmas morning.

At first the tragedy is assumed to be a simple accident, but Gently is not one to jump to conclusions and is soon in no doubt whatsoever that this was murder.

Merely produces the finest tapestries in England but the threads that Gently must unravel in his investigation are more complex than any weaver’s design, with everyone from the lord of the manor to his most lowly servant falling under suspicion.

THE 4th (pipe smoking / peppermint cream eating) CHIEF INSPECTOR GEORGE GENTLY, C.I.D., MYSTERY NOVEL. [now a new television series starring Martin Shaw]. ... FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, I HAVE SUPPLIED A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE BOOK, AND HERE IS WHAT THE DUST JACKET FLAPS [the 'blurb'] STATES :

**************************************************************************

When Chief Inspector Gently was invited by the Chief Constable of Northshire for a quiet spell of pike fishing over Christmas, he was confident that his holiday would not be interrupted by anything in the nature of a crime. On his journey from London, his companion was an ebullient and irresistbly charming young American soldier, William Earle, 'en route' for a Christmas holiday with Lord Somerhayes, the Chief Constable's nearest neighbour. The following day they were fellow-members at Lord Somerhayes' party. Gently sensed an indefinable tension, but he hardly expected to return to Merely Hall to investigate Earle's death - a death that looked accidental until he found the weapon.

The author of the already famous Gently stories has produced another undoubted success; often compared to Simenon, Alan Hunter has shown that he can equal the master in characterization, tension, and sheer readibility.

**************************************************************************

"Inspector Gently must now be considered one of the major additions to crime-fiction in recent years. He has all the attributes of a great fictional character. - Birmingham Post"].

not his best book 15 Feb 2012

I am steadily working my way through the Inspector Gently series (and highly recommend the recent tv adaption of them). I found this his weakest book so far after having thoroughly enjoying the first three. The plot seemed to meander and the characters were a bit wet.

Gently is invited to stay with the Chief Constable of Northshire, Sir Daynes Broke, for Christmas and enjoy some pike fishing. When a guest at neighbouring Merely Hall, owned by Lord Henry Somerhayes, is found dead at the foot of the grand staircase, most people assume it is a tragic accident. Gently is not so sure and urges Sir Daynes to look at the circumstances more closely.

This is a subtle psychological crime story where Gently finds himself in a strange position as he is not really part of the investigation and so people start confiding in him. There are plenty of suspects as Lord Henry has set up a thriving tapestry workshop in the stables and the workers live in Merely Hall.

I thought the way the various characters interacted was well done. I also thought the characters themselves were interesting. The eccentric Lord Henry, the irascible Sir Daynes whose bark is definitely worse than his bite, the beautiful Mrs Page and the down to earth Johnson and Brass two of the tapestry workers.

I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the Golden Age crime writers. This is the fourth book in the series and so far all have been completely different. Gently himself grows on the reader. He is unobtrusive, slow and through and what he doesn't know about human nature isn't worth knowing. With his pipe and his peppermint creams - not much in evidence in this story - he is a detective in the classic mould.
