Having bought this in the strength of one track, "A Wonderful Life," which appeared on the Everything But The Girl "Back to Mine" mix album, this was a bit of a punt for me. I was not disappointed. It starts with the sound of a car door being opened and shut, which sets the tone for the whole album. The album is perfect for a moody cruise around a city. Orchestral in its feel, it creates almost landscapes of sound - a kind of film score without the film. If you like David Holmes or Havanna's early stuff, you'll love it. It won't leave your in-car C.D. player for months. At least, that's what's happened with my copy.

A rare gem, Landcruising is an electronic concept album that is a dark, cool and subtly immense piece of work. It is perfectly suited to its subject matter, created for - or inspired by - night-time driving. From the click of Craig's seat belt at the start of the album, you are on a journey across dark, strange lands, through amber-glow urban sprawl and lost concrete realms. The sounds reflect perfectly the artificiality of the built environment - complex road systems, dark sinister architecture, the loneliness of cities.
I first heard (and loved) this album shortly after its original release. It has aged well, unlike many electronic albums.
If you want your music to not just entertain but to become a soundtrack to your life, this could be for you. If you also love driving, then Craig's album is as essential for your car as the steering wheel. Landcruising has the ability to turn an otherwise mundane journey into an memorable (cinematic) experience. I would go so far as to say that all contemporary vehicles should come with this album 'as standard'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unrecognized Genius 8 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
I was surprised to see this album with an average rating of 3.5. In my opinion it is one of the best techno albums ever produced and it is my favourite Carl Craig album by a long shot. The whole work flows together seamlessly. The idea of electronic music "taking you on a journey" has become something of a cliché, but Landcruising does just that. The best place to listen to this album is in the car, particularly, in my experience, on the motorway at night: the (rather obvious) clue is in the title. If you have got a long journey ahead, stick this in your CD changer and at least one hour will blissfully fly by.

Someone that clearly knows nothing of electronic music gave this three stars which of course I find clearly wrong but hey different strokes for different folks.
I love pretty much anything he does and is one of the few artists in the genre that can truly infuse the machines with soul funk and emotion. This album is testament to that and comes hugely recommended to those that UNDERSTAND electronic music. So not for everyone but those in the know. Five stars easy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but not profound 11 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
"dark, cool and subtly immense" writes one reviewer, and indeed everyone to his own taste - and I know little of electronica - but I do not understand such an interpretation. Neither do I understand why this CD is supposedly hard to obtain - a moment's searching found it on Amazon at a non-silly price...

I got Landcruising because (a) I heard "Sparkle" on The Blue Room, and (b) read here that the album including it was a retake on the original. I prefer originals, in the way that I prefer my Bach interpretations by the Academy of Ancient Music... I have to say it's an improvement on Tomita, but hardly a work of epic profundity: the "Landcruising" track is nice, "Science Fiction" fairly cool, but nothing that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop couldn't have come up with in the '60s... A footnote to electronica, maybe. I'll still explore Mr Craig's stuff, but without bated breath.
