Book Description

2 Sep 2011
Jeff Browning has been haunted by terrifying dreams since the mysterious disappearance of his father (a renowned physicist). But when he finds a portal in his father's office, he must overcome his fears in an attempt to find him. The portal takes him to another dimension - one populated by fantastic and dangerous creatures and also an advanced society of humans. As Jeff looks for clues regarding what may have happened to his father, he is accused by some of being a spy while thought by others to be a prophesized figure . . . who may be the key to victory in a developing war.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't want to come home from Nod! 14 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the kind of story that every young boy, and some middle aged women, wish they could experience for real. Jeff quite literally falls into another world, a world so different from his own that he has trouble believing it at first.

There are some fantastic creatures in this book, I found myself eagerly awaiting the appearance of the next one. And the book is peopled with believable characters, which gives the story a good basis from which to add the more fantastical elements.

This is a great read, the pace keeps up throughout, Jeff is a very nice young man, the monsters are just great and this woman of a certain age didn't want to put it down and do the ironing! Solid five stars, Mr Hoover. I am ready to put the iron down and read the next installment........

5.0 out of 5 stars Excuse the language but bloody brilliant! 27 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Land of Nod has been on my Kindle for a long time I'm ashamed to say but last Friday I decided to give it a go. By Sunday I had finished the book and wanted more. Luckily the author, I believe, is planning a sequel, phew!

What did I like about it? I like archetypes done in new and novel ways. There is a reason why a story becomes an archetype and that because everyone loves them and similarly I can't get enough of them either.

This story starts out as a quest. The hero wants to find his father who went missing years before. Following the almost cold trail he finds himself in another world. He fights monsters, deals with 'human' politics and strange abilities he has developed. Is he destined to save their world?

It is a sci-fi novel with elements of fantasy. The details are a nice touch and the author has put a lot of thought into what could have been holes in the story with a lesser story teller.

This is a great book for all ages and I whole heartedly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great young adult fantasy 25 July 2011
By Guerra
Format:Kindle Edition
Great young adult fantasy. The story captures your imagination and the characters are likable, of course I have my favorite one. You are sucked into a demension where all is strange yet familiar. You feel like it's a place you can call home, if you're not eaten by rodent sized T-Rex or jellyfish that fall from trees, first. This book is the first book in a trilogy but it doesn't leave the reader with too many unanswered questions. It has a good storyline that flows and can stand alone, but this reader can't wait for book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 17 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I could not put this book down and I can't say that for many books. Jeff finds himself in what appears to be a parallel universe in search for his father. It is about a normal boy who finds out he may not be so normal after all. I am not a huge fan of science fiction/adventure type books but I cannot believe that this book even got one bad review! It truly is one of those books you could get lost in. I am now reading the second book and I really want to know what has happened to Jeff's father!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut Performance 13 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Combine the ingredients of Multi-dimensional Space-time, Reluctant Male Hero, Strong and Brash Female Lead, Aggressive Reptilian Baddies that infiltrate your dreams, a Cowardly and Complacent Bureaucracy, an Ancient Prophecy, a Powerful Talisman and a War Between Continents ... and you're fermenting a pretty strong brew. The fast pace (most chapters are three pages or fewer) guarantees that you won't put the book down. This is Harrison Ford style adventure.

But there's more. Like most engrossing tales, "Land of Nod, The Artifact" also has a strong ethical foundation. We're at home in Gary Hoover's created alternate world because we've traveled there before: The King Arthur cycle, the adventure novels of Robert Louis Stevenson, the Tolkien saga -- All are built around humanity's ideals of courage, ingenuity and mercy. I, for one, look forward to the publication of further Land of Nod tales.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different for the weekend... 16 May 2011
By Beeshon
Format:Kindle Edition
The Kindle seems to have encouraged me to read things I would normally overlook. The Land of Nod is one of them; it sits on the same bookshelf as a Harry Potter book. And that is why I thoroughly enjoyed it. A normal, intelligent boy, Jeff, leading a normal life, suddenly finds himself in another dimension; the author is superb at describing the fantastical elements of this dimension and I had no trouble at all imagining the strange effects, creatures, and, well, just about everything of this strange land. The reader always has a firm foot on the ground, because, as Jeff is not one of the fantasy characters, he regularly compares features of the world in which he finds himself with planet earth - and that's why I liked the book - it didn't overreach my sci-fi boundaries of credibility.
The book ends with some unanswered questions - which I won't detail, or I would be giving things away - so I am hoping this means a sequel............I would, without a shadow of a doubt, snap it up in a jiff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read 15 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I have literally just finished this and have got to say I was impressed.

Initially i would say that the writing style is more aimed towards Young Adults but at 44 i still thoroughly enjoyed the story.
If you think along the lines of Harry Potter or The Hobbit, but it's a scifi story

The story follows a young boy (14) who, in search of his father, ends up in a parallel universe and gets involved in a battle between three races who live there.
Two races are human and the third is reptillian.

We don't get to see much of the reptillian race but we know they are not happy with their lot and are about to start a war with some new technology they have acquired.

The appearance of Jeff ( the 14 yr old) in this new world is foretold in a prophecy but the question is, is Jeff the character of the prophecy or not and will he be able to stop the war !!!

You can tell by the ending ( and the fact that the next three chapters (teaser) are awaiting you for the next book) that there is more to come and I for one, will be looking forward for the next installment.

There were very few ( 2-3 ) minor spelling errors I spotted which is quite refreshing as many other books have a lot more besides.
So if you're looking for an easy read and a good little story to kill a day or so then you can't go wrong with this one....
