Land of Lost Content 27 Nov 2009

Probably the best book I read this year. It gives a thorough and absorbing account of the Luddite rebellion and the people involved. Although written some time ago, it has some surprising links to current day events - groups of young men carrying out military drills and manoeuvres on the moors around Yorkshire and Lancashire for example.

One of the best contemporary books ever written on the subject of the Luddite rebellion of 1812. Roert Reid has produced a clearly written account of what the state of the country was like during the Napoleonic wars and during the series of violent events that were taking place in the troubled North of England of around 1812. Lessons can be drawn from the men who formed the 'Luddites' many of whom were quite intelligent and articulate workers and the effects of technology upon industrial communities. Highly recommended.
