Product Description

Riveting and fast paced, In the Land of Blue Burqas depicts sharing the love and truth of Christ with women living in Afghanistan which has been called "the world's most dangerous country in which to be born a woman." These stories are honest and true. The harsh reality of their lives is not sugar-coated and that adds to the impact of the book. Through storytelling the author shows how people who don't know Christ come to see Him, His truth and His beauty. The stories provide insight into how a Jesus-follower brought Jesus' teachings of the Kingdom of God to Afghanistan. They reveal the splendor of Christ, the desire of human hearts, and that precious instance where the two meet.

I am not a religious person and while the book is written with a Christian perspective, I nevertheless found it extremely interesting. I loved the way the author managed to change attitudes and points of view, and to inform the Western reader at the same time about Afghan culture and the influence of Islam. I would not hesitate to recommend this book.

Kate gives a fantastic insight into the lives and beliefs of ordinary families in Afghanistan. In some ways it is a bit like a Christian version of the Bookseller of Kabul. The descriptions of the conversations are fantastic and if you read them carefully, you will find useful hints for discussions with Muslims in your own home town. Kate really does show how BEAUTIFUL Jesus is and how it is often most sensible to recount His stories in your own words instead of wanting to get involved in heavy theological discussions.

I borrowed this book from a friend first of all and then realised I just had to get my own copy as there were so many passages to mark and pass on to others. It is also full of love for Afghanistan and this is important since we mostly hear only negative news stories out of this region.

A book that gets way beneath the surface veneer of so much so-called enlightened 'western understanding'. Kate's storylines take us step by step (as she did to begin with) into the heart of the theology/ideology that underpins and undergirds so much of Afghamistan today, and through many centuries. It is one of those books that is literally 'un-putdownable'. It breathes authenticity and integrity. We are all the wiser and enriched through Kate's own five year journey - graphically illustrated in iluminated story-telling. And behind and inter-twined in it all are the women - who ache, laugh, smile, wonder, and reveal a humanity in their hearts which somehow seems to elude so many of their menfolk. The future must surely belong to them, as they see lifted off the darkness, to be replaced with garments of light and praise. The future beckons......

I found this compulsive reading which gave a valuable insight into the horrendous life in Afghanistan - of women in particular. I also gained an understanding of at least some of the culture and beliefs of Muslims. As a Christian believer, I was impressed with how Kate (the author) simplified the Holy Bible in a manner her listeners could understand and relate to - just as Jesus did with his listeners.

During her five years working there, Kate regularly placed herself in dangerous situations in order to serve the community she lived in and to bring to them the love of Christ Jesus. The love of Jesus shines out from every page of this book although I do believe it would be equally enjoyed by a non-believer.

This book gives a fascinating insight into the lives of the Afghan people.
The book is mostly about the strength of the authors faith and the differences between her beliefs and the beliefs of those she met on her journey.
However, even for an atheist, it is an uplifting story of one woman trying to help a nation torn apart by war.
I have to say that I didn't necessarily agree with her parting musings, as I don't believe that the Afghanistan populace accepting Jesus, his love and his teachings will bring about an end to the war.
All in all though, a good book and definitely helped me have a greater understanding of the people I met when I was out there.

I cannot recommend this too highly. It is an amazing insight into the lives of the people of Afghanistan, and a challenge to everyone too think about the difference between their own culture and what is fundamentally real, human and spiritual. The author's wisdom and graciousness shine in all she writes.
If you read this, Kate...
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

I loved this book! Whilst the subject matter isn't an easy topic, I found this book very easy to read and finished it very quickly because I was so interested by it! The story is presented in a lovely personal style, with explanations and thoughts along the way. I would recommend it to someone willing to challenge their beliefs, the way they think and wanting delve deeper into the harsh truths, yet beautiful people of the heart of Afghanistan...

I have read many books which have been either non-fiction or fiction but written by Asian women and their perspective of life in an Arab nation.. I liked the fact that this was written from the viewpoint of living amongst women in Afghanistan by an American woman and gave a huge help as I speak on behalf of people persecuted for their faith in many nations including Arab countries.
