Product Description

Review

'Jess Walter has just about lapped the field with his superior first novel OVER TUMBLED GRAVES. The suspense and surprises are terrific, but best of all are the characters he has managed to create.' (James Patterson )

'A home run off the first pitch...a tremendous debut, full of pace and tension and unexpected twists, but also full of depth and quiet intelligence that together lift it head and shoulders above the pack.' (Lee Child on Over Tumbled Graves )

"A most accomplished debut." (Sunday Telegraph on Over Tumbled Graves )

'Walter renders his blind land with a clear-eyed, compassionate vision. (Kirkus Reviews )

'An exceptional crime novel that transcends the mystery of crime and takes a courageous look at an even more profound mystery- the mystery of what it takes to continue living. As Jess Walter probes the nature of evil and its impact, he challenges his readers to reconsider their own complexity. Totally absorbing.' (Ursula Hegi on Over Tumbled Graves )

Lee Child

"A tremendous debut, full of pace and unexpected twists".

I picked this up in the motorway services when I was looking for a cop thriller to relax with. It turned out to be much more than that - a beautifully written, funny and involving story about bullying, nerds, the dotcom boom madness, and love.

Highly recommended!

This is not a straightforward thriller. In parts it reminded me of Stephen King's rites of passage stories such as "The Body". Like King, the author writes brilliantly about being young and powerless in the face of bullying and intimidation, and also about the intense desire to fit in and be accepted by your peers. By using the device of a story within a story, the author manages to create the tension of a thriller whilst exploring the life of a man who's lost his way (or never really found it). The book is thoughtfully written, and makes some interesting points about consumerism and the spiritual and emotional gaps in modern-day society.

Caroline Mabry, the policewoman who first appeared in Jess Walter's novel "Over Tumbled Graves", is again featured. Facing burnout in her job after a stressful case and an unrequited infatuation with a former colleague, she finds herself becoming attracted to a strangely familiar man who wishes to confess to a murder...

This is a gripping and well-written novel. It's not your average thriller, but actually quite a lot more.

A Lacklustre Sequel 4 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Having read Walters' previous crime novel, "Over Tumbled Graves", I rushed out and bought "Land of the Blind" as soon as it came out, looking forward to another gripping read. What a disappointment! For me, the narrative structure doesn't work at all.A man walks into police headquarters wanting to confess to a murder. Inexplicably, he doesn't want to say who was murdered or where the body might be found. Instead, he demands pen and paper and sits down to write his life story, beginning in early childhood. The story cuts irritatingly between his written narrative and the attempts of Detective Caroline Mabry to find out what happened, but unfortunately she seems to play only a minor role. The main focus is on the mystery man, his childhood friend Eli(who is really too grotesque to be believable) and the ex school bully Pete. I couldn't really get involved with any of them and by the end of the story I was so bored that I couldn't care less "whodunnit". More about Caroline herself next time please -all the folksy childhood angst just didn't come off, and Stephen King has done it so much better.
