Product Description

Synopsis
Thomas cannot live with his terrible secret. As he heads away from all that he knows and all that he loves he has the word BETRAYAL engraved upon his every thought. How could his mother do this to him? His beliefs force him on to seek a land he is assured does not exist this side of death. That decision sets in motion a series of events that allows evil to encompass what is left behind, allows those whom he loves to be cruelly tested. His is a learning journey that brings love and hate, despair and joy in equal measure, mixed with adventures beyond his imagination, shared by a travelling companion whose loyalty is all that matters in this quest. His troubled mother and his autocratic mentor wait at home with the news that will free him from all anxiety. Will those who follow in his footsteps find him? Will he make it back home to a hero's welcome, or spring the trap that is set to destroy him? Read on and find out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotions, 14 April 2008

I loved this book. Reading it on a plane, sat between 2 complete strangers, I got so involved in Thomas' trials and traumas I had tears running down my cheeks - and no tissue to wipe them away! OK, so I am a soft touch, but I thought it was very well written, superb characters and wonderfully evocative of the Highlands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Green Fields, 13 Mar 2008
By Evelyn (Norfolk, UK) - See all my reviews
A timeless story in an anonymous setting, it can be experienced at various levels, depending on the individual reader's perception. At first glance it tells about the trials and tribulations of Thomas the cat, out on an adventure, so it seems. But there is more to it. Written in the best tradition of Highland Bards, this is also very much a tale involving ancient lore and wisdom. Told not by man but related from the perceived perspective of creatures closely associated with mankind adds an interesting twist but does not distract from the fact that there exists an inter-dependence between man and nature, and that a balance needs to be maintained if coexistence is to continue. Finally, it is also a tale of how, despite an ever, and increasingly quicker, changing world, certain values never change. Many of us live a life in the fast lane: being so busy and so preoccupied with ourselves that we often fail to see what is happening around us, just like the two boys in the story, who with tongues clacking ten to the dozen and more interested in hard cash than in the miracles of nature that surround them, neither hear nor see anything of it. There is a lot in this story to 'see' and to 'hear' if the reader is prepared to look and to listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST PURR-FECT, 27 Feb 2008
By Michael Merritt (Scotland) - See all my reviews

This is a book on many levels - and that is why it appeals across the age range. For a first novel it is a brilliant debut. I am not a cat lover, but I loved this book. It has a friendliness that wraps the reader in the warmest of metaphorical blankets only to take him on a journey that is essentially about the struggle of good and bad, inner peace, integration and of self identity.
It is equally a book that can be read simply as a joyous children's story.
Joan Campbell understands cats and people and anthropomorphism - a real cat-trick! Hence she has pulled-off a difficult but stunning triumph.
