We have this on loan from the library (8.99 hardback!!!!!) and my five year old daughter and I love it. The illustrations are similar to Quentin Blake's (perhaps cruder) but the beauty is in the rhymic poetry - e.g. Sir Lancelot to the worried maiden as he prepares to fight the wicked knight:
'I'll take my trusty broadsword
and give his bonce a bang.
I'll cut his coward's shield in half
and make his breastplate clang.'
It rolls off the tongue, it's silly but tells the story and we love it. I'll be getting the paperbacks of the series (King Arthur and the Mighty Contest, Excalibur and the Magic Sword, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight) because much as it's a fab book, 9 pounds is really too much for a baby hardback.
