Product Description

Lamhe is the story of moments; moments of passion...moments of ecstasy...moments of love. The first time Viren (Anil Kapoor) saw Pallavi (Sridevi) that moment stood still and she captivated him. Pallavi, with the dreamy eyes, the tinkling laughter, the singing voice and a strong willed happy attitude to life. Unable to express himself in her presence, Viren found hapiness in reminiscing each moment of the time spent with her; until the moment when he realised that Pallavi loved Siddharth (Deepak Malhotra), in whose arms Pallavi found solace and hapiness. His unexpressed love locked tightly in his heart; Viren saw the love of his life in the arms of another. Viren's life changed, from a carefree adolescent lad to an unhappy man. But fate had another plans for Viren. Once again a moment changed his life forever. It was the moment he first saw Pooja (Sridevi); her rediance shattered the darkness in his heart and he learnt to laugh again. But memories of an old love take time to fade. Will Viren find another moment of hapiness in his life ? Is there a moment of love for Pooja ?

Lamhe is Yash Chopra at his emotional best, Anil Kapoor at his regal best, Anupam Kher at his humorous best, Waheeda Rehman at her vintage best.....and SRIDEVI? Well suffice to say that Sridevi was created by God for the sole purpose of playing Pallavi and Pooja. No, she does not play...she lives both the parts in the way only she could have. Sheer magic this one! And the DVD only makes you watch it over and over again. Great extras with Lamhe's Mahurat footage, Star studded premiere, trophy ceremony and Chopra in conversation with Karan Johar about the making of this masterpiece. Go for it.

This is about a man (Anil Kapoor) who falls in love with a slightly older woman (#1 challenge of Indian ideas: the man has to be older). He never tells her and assists in her marriage to someone else. There is an accident. The couple die but a baby survives and becomes the guys ward. He avoids seeing her as he cant get over the love of her mother. Eventually (when she is 18 - and he presumable around 40) he sees her and finds she is a replica of Mum. (SPOILER FOLLOWS)
They get to know each other and the girl (Sridevi - playing this part as well as her mother) falls in love with him. He represses his own love for her and initially confuses it with the memories of her Mum. They then examine the possibility of a relationship with #2 Indian no-no of a cross generational relationship.
This movie is regarded as a modern classic. It was also controversial and even shunned initially by its challenge of cultural taboos. To modern and western eyes there is no issue. In fact I wonder if India would be as bothered today. I have recently seen several hindi movies with leading actors such as Akshay Kumar and SRK, who are now in their 40s, acting across from actresses in their 20s.
It is a well-crafted script which won an award. In fact the movie won awards for Sridevi, Anupam Kher (who plays the guys best friend) as well as best movie. Anil Kapoor didn't win an award but he is also very good here.
Now it was 1991 and I don't find the music or occasional traditional dance to my taste. However the movie does have a modern feel, looks good and is well acted.
Elsewhere on the Net it mostly rates between 7 and 9 out of 10.

Bollywood Films 2 July 2009

An 'oldie but a goodie'!This film is a good introduction to the 'Bollywood' film genre. The Hindi film industry is the most productive on the planet, churning out over 700 films annually. The films are usually a wonderful melange of drama, bathos and pathos-all mixed with a sprinkling of music and dance.A savage fight scene will break off for a song and dance number.Overblown, stagey and just plain wonderful!
'Lamhe' is the story of unrequited love. Anil Kapoor gives his usual 'value for money' performance and Sridevi overacts in the traditional Bollywood actress manner.Still, watch it for the dated clothes, the great songs and the fantastic jewellry and costumes.
