Monteverdi's phenomenal Lament of Ariadne set off a vogue for settings based on the idea that led from Monteverdis own reworkings (twice), through pale imitations (some of which are on this disc), to splendid new creations (d'India's Lamento d'Orfeo, Strozzi's various Lamenti), via Haydn's Arianna a Naxos, to Richard Strauss. However this selection from the Consort of Musicke's original 2CD project probably isn't the best introduction. For a start the rerelease has cut the texts and translations, which in a text-themed recital is frankly just sloppy, and secondly the 3CD series of Lamenti by Vartolo on Naxos features the best of this CD together with equally good pieces by other composers and is better documented. For a star performance of the Lamento d'Arianna one can choose between Anne Sofie von Otter (DG), Maria Christina Kiehr (HM), and several others.
