This disc is intended to present a lesser heard side of the French Baroque, with music for Holy Week from the south of France. The main content is the first Lamentations for each of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday by Jean Gilles, more well known for his requiem. There are a few other odds and sods, a couple of short songs by other French Baroque composers, three short spoken pieces and a foray back into the Renaissance with a motet by Elzear Genet, also known as Carpentras, another one of these lost Renaissance composers waiting to be rediscovered.

The notes are extremely brief and not particularly enlightening, and there are no sung texts. It's all well sung although I'm not particularly a fan of the French Baroque myself. If you are though, at this knockdown price it may be worth a punt to get a taste of Gilles' Lamentations, as all the other recordings of them seem rather expensive to say the least.

i saw this cd in a shop around 2005 when i was in a very stressful (ongoing due to sleepless nights due to noise nuisance neighbours from hell).i felt a peace when i walked up to the shop, and felt i had to go in.God was certainly in control.i bought the cd and took it home and put it on with the earphones over my ears.the tension instantly eased, and i was able to feel humanish again for the first time in years.
