Product Description

Product Description

This book details the sinking of the HMS Vanguard outside of Dun Laoghaire port in 1875. While the only fatality of the incident was the Captain's little white dog, it provides valuable insight into naval and military history of the late nineteenth century. Moreover, the backdrop of naval life, the social and economic situation for sailors and officers alike, the subsequent court-martial and the furore it caused make for fascinating reading.

About the Author

Chris Thomas is a military and naval history enthusiast. The story of the sinking of the HMS Vanguard has long fascinated him and two of his wife's great uncles served on the battleship. This is his first book.

Not at all lamentable 31 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
A surprisingly readable book. The story of the sinking and the subsequent court-martial are told in detail, but with a good narrative flow. The naval background chapters are also well written and interesting. This book began as a family history project, and there is perhaps more detail on the individuals in the crew than the general history reader would be interested in, but persevere with it and you'll be rewarded with a good yarn which shows the author's dry sense of humour and humanity.
