Book Description

10 Sep 2011 Shire Collections
Rene Lalique was one of the giants of twentieth century decorative arts and a master of the Art Deco idiom. Born in 1860, early artistic talent led to an apprenticeship with Paris goldsmith Louis Aucoc. By 1885 Rene had established his own workshop, and for the next twenty years he designed and made jewellery of great originality and beauty. Though this became famous worldwide, before the turn of the century he began experimenting with glass, and it is for this that Lalique is today most famous: for the fine art perfume bottles he produced for Francois Coty and for a vast repertoire besides, including vases, lighting, clocks, car mascots and architectural commissions. This lavishly illustrated history celebrates the extraordinary jewellery and glass of Rene Lalique, and the glass of the Lalique company up to the present day.

So, how can I say that this 'new' book is not up to date? Well, it claims to be about the whole history of Lalique, including, as the description says 'and the glass of the Lalique company up to the present day.' Unfortunately the latter years are covered in remarkably scant fashion with very little of the recent work, and only half a dozen illustrations of what I might consider to be some so-so pieces. Infact, though we are copious collectors of recent offerings, none of our collection features at all!

Gripe over, this is otherwise a lovely read and is well illustrated. I would not call it complete (for there is still much missing) but given the size and the price it's a great job. And penned by Mr Knowles you just know it's going to be authoritative without being pompous. Sadly and perhaps inexplicably given the popularity of Lalique, there are few books about it. That means if you want to read up on it, you've little to choose from. I you choose this book though, you will not be disappointed, just please, Eric, a little more on post 2000 work for the (hopeful) next edition and, perhaps, a feature on the Lalique museum too?

A good first book for someone new to collecting the work of Rene Lalique, well written and easy to read. The serious collector will want information about all the items from the extensive Lalique catalogue and will look elsewhere for this
