Product Description

Product Description

Lake Wobegon Days is the marvellous chronicle of an imaginary place located somewhere in the middle of the state (but not on the map) and named after an Indian word meaning 'Here we are!' or 'We sat all day in the rain waiting for you.' From the narrator - a skinny Protestant kid fascinated by the Catholic church - we learn of the town's beginnings and of the settlers who made their lives there. A contemporary classic filled with warmth and humour, sadness and tenderness, songs and poems, it is also an unforgettable portrait of small-town America.

He wrote and appeared in Robert Altman's final film, A Prairie Home Companion and is the author of many books including the Lake Wobegon novels, which include Lake Wobegon Days, Pontoon and Pilgrims.

Gossip From Home 30 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Since I first heard GK reading from this book on BBC's Radio 4 he has become one of my favourite companions.

There is no doubt that he knows his characters like close family members, they are the most perfect, well formed beings you will find in literature. The greater gift though is that he has identified the archetypes who formed the backdrop to all our lives. Our parent's friends - and enemies, the shop assistants we know by name, everyone we grew up with in fact, if we were lucky enough to grow up in a small town, lives in his work.

I bought the book following his broadcasts and confess to being disappointed by the opening chapter, but this quickly passed. The scene setting nature and faux history didn't quite charm me as they might have. Once the characters and 'biography' became the focus though this changed immediately. The book quickly became a well thumbed friend to be joined by its siblings as they were published.

I find myself less excited, and charmed, by his journalism but when he concentrates on Lake Wobegone and its inhabitants there is no doubt that he is on his strongest ground.

None of us can see the future and it is impossible to say who, and what work will stand the test of time. There is no doubt in my mind, though, that Garrison Keillor's work, in the form of his greatest creation, Lake Wobegone, will live on like Huckleberry Finn as each new generation discovers it for themselves.

Lake Woebegon Days 5 Feb 2010

This book is a great read, I heard it read by Garrison Keillor on Radio 4 ages ago, and I have an old copy, which is very tattered now! That's the sign of a good book, lots of wear. It's so hard at times to tell the difference between reality and the fiction, but it is so funny in places, I annoy my husband by laughing out loud. This new copy I bought for my adult son - He thinks it's a brilliant book. So politically incorrect!

This book was recommended by a friend and I found it extremely funny. So often American humour doesn't work in England but this one does - at least for me.
