Biography

2D: “Uhmmm….The first Gorillaz album, our debut record, was more Russel’s…like… lots of hip-hop, funk and Cuban dub stars. Demon Days right, came more from Noodle and her dark doomy demos that she made, and all of her contemplations on the world ‘in a place of night’. Plastic Beach came out mainly from Murdoc’s head, all of his mucky exploits and global collaborations and legendary mash-ups… Read more in Amazon's Gorillaz Store

Amazon.co.uk Review

So, the Gorillaz have hired some space monkeyz to remix their album? Right... The official story behind Laika Come Home is that it's the product of an intergalactic odyssey apparently undertook by D-Zire, Dubversive and Gavva, all descendents of the first chimps sent into space. And what does a lonely simian listen to in the dark coldness of space? Why bone-shaking dubscapes with enough reverb to transmit their message to the outer edges of the universe, of course.

Re-editing and producing a dub version of an album might sound like a pretty self-indulgent affair and to a certain extent Laika is. Whilst Gorillaz sounded original, it was a pop project with all the constraints that went with it – can you imagine the 6 minute remixed version of "Clint Eastwood" making it onto MTV?. But that's exactly what makes Laika so good. Listen to the "De-Punked" version of "Punk" with its meandering, decayed trumpet and computerised tweaks-- hardly recognisable as the original--or the swinging old-school ska that crops ups on "5/4". The two-tone skank of "M1/A1" (with Terry Hall) sounds like it should have been the original version, while the real killer tracks are those injected with dancehall vibes by DJ U Brown and Earl 16. Who says "you don't get paid for doing what you love"? Not Damon Albarn. --Caroline Butler

When this was being played in a store in London, I instantly fell in love with it. As soon as the first track starts you know that this is how Gorillaz is meant to sound. All the heavy bass and reverb in the world, all crammed into the zombie-hiphop sound that makes Gorillaz so unique. If you liked the Original, and loved the G-sides album, you'll absolutely adore this. A recommended buy for anyone.

Dub an Delicacy 4 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
Although some may be put off a second album of remixes of the first Gorillaz album, this is not some cynical rehash of a successful pop group’s limited back catalogue in order to generate extra income for Megabux Recordz Inc., Virgin Islands. Yes they are remixes, and yes they are brilliant. The remixes are brilliant wobbly dub monsters that lurch out of the speakers, grab your hips and set you skanking. They are more than that, though. There is delicacy and pathos here among the sonic booms. But who cares about that; fast forward to the next mental dub! Erm, no, listen to them all, they’re gigantic. And when will Russel, Murdock, 2D and Noodle knock out the next masterpiece?

Good remixes 7 Feb 2004
Format:Audio CD
I don't think there's any way I could even sit through the orginal album, I used to own it though, these remixes are something different and special. I love the modern dub sounds. It isn't Scientist, King Tubby, Lee Perry but it is still good to listen to. The delay suits Damon's voice very well. I am NOT a blur fan!

Great album for the summer!
Laid back grooves, heavy dub bass lines and a much slower vibe make this album brilliant for lazing around in the sunshine. Read more

Gorillaz - Laika Come Home - very enjoyable
This CD by Gorillaz is dub reggae based, with influences of UB40 and Zion Train. It is something different, and the Gorillaz stamp of originality is definitely on this one. Read more

A bit niche, but not bad
I quite like this. It's basically the first Gorillaz album cut into a dub mix. It's good dub, too, with quite an old-fashioned feel about it. Read more

This is a fantastic concept for Gorillaz and Spacemonkeyz to try. If you don't like dub, steer clear, if you do, buy this album. Read more
