Reviews

This disturbing and compelling anthology series helps lay to rest the long-cherished idea that women are the gentler sex. Lady Killers presents dramatic reconstructions of seven infamous murder trials where in each case the defendant was female; if convicted, all faced the gallows.

From the horrifying case of Victorian 'baby farmer' Amelia Dyer - suspected of strangling hundreds of infants in her care - to the trial and execution of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain, Lady Killers looks at crimes which shocked and scandalised a nation, examining the individual's motives and often brutal methods in depth. Introduced by Robert Morley, these dramas feature powerful performances from an outstanding cast which includes Elaine Paige, Joan Sims, Rita Tushingham, George Baker, Peter Sallis and Michael Kitchen, among others.

1980 ITV Granada dramatisations of the trials of six famous murderesses and one acquittal. The 2nd series Lady Killers - The Complete Series 2 [DVD] deals with male murderers.
The courtroom scenes in these English cases are verbatim but other parts are dramatised.
Although all are worth watching, particularly Joan Sims as the Victorian baby farmer (and murderer) Amelia Dyer, the revelation is Georgina Hale as Ruth Ellis.
This episode 'Lucky, Lucky Thirteen!' captures the tension and starkness of this celebrated case of a 28 year old nightclub hostess cold bloodedly gunning down her racing driver lover in the street. Hale's portrayal of Ellis' testimony in court and her icy control cracking dramatically, resonates authenticity.
An 80s drama series that has stood the test of time well, thanks mainly to the careful accuracy of the courtroom scenes.

Like many of the other reviewers, I watched this series in my teens, glued to the screen. The haunting introductions and interludes from Robert Morley make it even more spine-tingling.
This was a good series and whilst it probably is a bit dire for todays TV fans, it was educational for its time and I'm sure, inspired many a crime writer in the years which followed.
I do feel however, that the quality of these recordings is very poor. Given the date of some other TV-DVD transfers, I feel the distributors could have went the extra mile to improve the quality of the recordings. An inspiring and enjoying TV series nonetheless.

I used to watch this back when I was a kid, and it scared the life out me! This is a must for any 40 something who wants to relive Friday night TV from the early 80s. The performances are first class, and each story is well put together.

I can't wait for series two, which expands the genre from "women who kill" to "men who kill women"

Can't recommend this highly enough!!

Maybe looks a bit dated now - but it was a great (and interesting) series.
