I've got the tenth-rate remake blues, September 13, 2006,

The Ladykillers--remade with irritable bowel movements? WHY?
What a falling off was there! Run, do not walk to the Alec Guinness/Katie Johnson version to see what was so foully trampled on here. Two stars ... because the professor is on rare occasions slightly amusing, so I cannot entirely despise the film.

Having watched the original Ealing "Ladykillers", I bought this updated version to see which direction the Coen brothers would take the masterpiece in. And, although it is not a patch on the original, it still has its upsides.
The main problem I had with this film was the poor character writing. The old lady, who was a sweet old London dearie in the classic version, has been transformed into a loudmouthed, OTT and thoroughly stereotypical southern Black woman, which does remove much of the intrigue of the original. The group of criminals is also poorly chosen in my eyes, with more than one of them grating on my nerves by the end. That said, the story is of course magnificent, and Hanks plays the Alec Guinness role excellently, bringing his own slant to the character which made the original film such a classic. Considered away from the original, this is an acceptable film with a slightly poor cast. Unfortunately, the Coen Brothers have failed to make this a remake a modern classic as it should be.

Just wish I could give it a 0,

Absolutely dreadful. The original is so good and this is so bad, it's worth watching just to compare and marvel. Just mind boggling.
