Music for England,
By
This review is from: Lady of the Lake, music by Thomas Hewitt Jones (Audio CD)
This is a lovely collection of songs, hymns and tunes that make me think of the English countryside. There's a mixture of sacred - delicate choral works and robust organ pieces - and the earthy. There are some very pretty melodies together with interesting, more modern and 'difficult' pieces. Some tracks sound to me to be tailor-made for TV dramas.Hewitt Jones borrows themes from English and Scottish country music, in the tradition of so many of the great composers. Some of the more robust elements of the Lady of the Lake certainly sound like the kind of music that would have been played by fiddlers in taverns. It's a good set. This composer is one to watch.
