Review

'If an author can make what could be an absurd tale such a touching and thoughtful modern adult fairytale I need to read much more of their work.' --savidgereads.wordpress.com

'...a gentle tale with strong and genuine emotions, which becomes an admirable story of pathos.' --Stuck in a Book

Product Description

The Tebricks, a charming, young, upstanding couple, remove to Oxfordshire to begin their married life, happily unaware of the future awaiting them. When Sylvia turns suddenly into a fox, their fortunes are changed forever, for all her strenuous attempts to adhere to the proprieties of her upbringing, and resist the feral instincts of her current form. Increasingly cut off from the world, Richard does all he can to protect his wife from the dangers inherent in the world outside their grounds, dangers which are impossible to fight, and which inevitably break down the boundaries between them and the world beyond the garden walls.

Brilliantly Bizzarre 21 Nov 2009

The lady mentioned in the title of David Garnett's novella `Lady Into Fox' is Silvia Tebricks or as she was before she was married, Silvia Fox. Though the surname it seems is a coincidence as becoming a fox doesn't seem to actually run in the family looking back through its history as the author, and also narrator, tells us. No indeed, it appears that Silvia Tebrick's becoming a fox one day is just one of life's great puzzles.

The event itself happens in the opening pages of the novella and what happens when ones wife suddenly becomes a ginger four legged creature. For really though the awful thing has actually happened to Silvia it is Richard who we really follow in the novella as his wife not only changes physically but also characteristically. At first Silvia continues to happily sit at the table and play bridge dressed in one of her jackets. She is also happy to follow him round the house and point out, though she can't speak for she is a fox now, where he is going wrong and loves nothing more than snoozing on the bed or an armchair not going out. Nature soon takes over and how does one deal with a wife who has become a fox and becomes as cunning as one too with the natural desire to escape? A wonderfully bizarre and brillaint novella, heartily recommended.

The story about a lady who suddenly and without reason turns into a fox sparked my interest enough to order a copy from my local library. The library didn't have it on their shelf's but they were prepared to take it out of storage for the total sum of £1, when I received the copy I noticed that it was printed in 1967 and was last taken out the library in 1978. Its a shame I have to take it back.

The story is only about 100 pages long and yes indeed a lady does turn into a fox quite suddenly to the dismay of her husband. The book then follows the husbands story as he vows to still make his marriage work as he can still see that this fox is indeed his wife. The fox certainly acts like his wife, preferring to dress and sit at the table to eat and the couple do enjoy their walks and games of cards. Of course this marital bliss can't last long before the fox begins to more and more revert to more fox-like behaviour while the ladys behaviour starts to disappear.

This is a delightful book which adds the bizarre to everyday life without descending into fantasy. I was easily able to suspend disbelief for this rather charming tale. Recommended.

Intriguing 7 Aug 2005
By Simon Thomas VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
As a member of the Bloomsbury Group, and Virginia Woolf's nephew-in-law, it is perhaps surprising that there is little of a Modernist slant to Garrett's very short novel. The plot has been accurately described by another reviewer, but this is a novel which has the charm of taking a fantastic element and incorporating it into a narrative without making the novel a fantasy. The progression of the couple's relationship is perhaps predictable, but entirely captivating, and there are moments of true passion or horror or affection. Each is caused in the reader with a few deft dashes of Garrett's pen, and his unusual scenario prevents any possibility of stereotype in his descriptions of love. It is a testimony to Garrett's talent that the novel does not seem farcical, although the synopsis does - disbelief is willingly suspended and this is a worthy afternoon's read for anyone.
