Who Stole Lady Neeley's Bracelet?

Was it the fortune hunter, the gambler, the servant, or the rogue? All of London is abuzz with speculation, but it is clear that one of four couples is connected to the crime.

Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, May 1816

Julia Quinn enchants: A dashing fortune hunter is captivated by the Season's most desired debutante . . . and must prove he is out to steal the lady's heart, not her dowry.

Suzanne Enoch tantalizes: An innocent miss who has spent her life scrupulously avoiding scandal is suddenly—and secretly—courted by London's most notorious rogue.

Karen Hawkins seduces: A roving viscount comes home to rekindle the passionate fires of his marriage . . . only to discover that his beautiful, headstrong bride will not be so easily won.

Mia Ryan delights: A lovely, free-spirited servant is dazzled by the romantic attentions of a charming earl . . . sparking a scandalous affair that could ruin them both.

You'll hear it first from Lady Whistledown

As an assortment of characters debut, the Bridgertons and Featheringtons are thin on the ground in here. Kate and her dog Newton are mentioned in passing, while Benedict, Colin, Penelope, and Mrs. Featherington are on the guest list at Lady Neeley's infamous dinner party, where the trouble begins with the disappearance of the lady's ruby bracelet in the first story (a mystery solved at the end of the book).
The stories in this volume overlap a little (sometimes including the same event told from different viewpoints), but on the whole the order of the stories in the book is chronological. In the aftermath of Waterloo, various male characters are ex-military, and none of them have a high opinion of "Prinny's" (later George IV's) "re-enactment" of Waterloo on the first anniversary, complete with orchestra and fireworks in a public park.
Each story contains (usually concluding with) explicit sexual content. All the male romantic leads are good-looking and experienced, the ladies inexperienced (their appearances, dowries, and prospects varying). Tillie, for instance, is expected to make a match with a duke (this occurs before the novel SPLENDID), while Miss Martin and Sophia aren't even on the market for differing reasons.
Quinn wrote all the Lady W columns herein, one per chapter (and each story is a multi-chapter effort).
Quinn, Julia: "The First Kiss" Tilly deeply misses her brother Harry, killed in action not long ago. For one thing, now she can't kill him for having told approximately a thousand men that he despaired of his gawky little sister ever getting married, and spending most of his time on the battlefield talking about her dowry. This wasn't what she had in mind when she wanted to know how Harry's final months were spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Lady Whistledown! 24 May 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Four superb stories in the wonderful world of Lady Whistledown. As always, Lady Whistledown comments on events in her Society Papers and these stories revolve around the theft of a ruby bracelet. Four gorgeous heroes and four beautiful ladies find love whilst the hunt for the thief goes on. This is an un-put-downable book as always when in Julia Quinn's Regency England. I highly recommend it. You'll want to finish it in one sitting and you should!

If you enjoyed the snippets of gossip from Lady W in Julia Quinns Bridgerton series then you are in for a treat. Shes back! Only now she has much more to say as she heads each of the short stories pouring delicious spite and sparkle into the mix. The stories are highly entertaining and weave together as Lady W takes you on a journey through regency London to discover the ruby thief who is terrorising the terrible ton. With a few juicy liaisons thrown into the mix you cant help but love this collection. Maybe next well see a Lady W novel all of her own!

2.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant premise that does not deliver. 18 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book after falling in love with Lady W in Julia Quinn`s novels, however sadly this collection of short stories does not live up to expectations. The premise is brilliant, taking four groups of interconnected characters over a period of several days and telling their individual stories. All the four stories clevery overlap with a few identical scenes appearing in several stories but viewed from a different perspective each time. That is a very clever piece of group writing and must be praised. However good this literary device may be, it is badly let down by a lack of research into the era by some of the writers. Inaccurate diaogue (including phrases that didn`t exist till the 20th Century, such as 'hello' and 'I was just kidding') pepper the text and disrupt the flow of the narrative. Characters act in ways men and women in their situation would never have dreamed of and yet its all rather predictable. I found myself skipping pages with a mixture of boredom and irritation. It`s a real shame as I felt this book had Great potential. That said, if you know nothing about the regency period you`ll probably enjoy this, but those readers who, like me, favour historical accuracy, steer clear of this and read some of Julia Quinn`s own novels, or better still, the well researched Eloisa James.

The book is absolutely hilarious, I love Julia Quinn and her co-authors do not disappoint. If you like your historical romance with a lot of laughs and a little bit of zing this is definitely the book for you.
