Annis Wychwood is a classic late Georgette Heyer heroine - beautiful, independent, and well past marriageable age! And Oliver Carleton (with an e) is one of her best "sardonic" heroes - truly mad, bad and dangerous to know. But of course it is their shared love of the ridiculous that unites them, and sets them apart from the rigid society whose rules he shuns and she longs to. The juveniles' sub-plot is also classic Heyer, and less interesting, although I remember when I was fourteen I preferred their story to that of the aged Annis and Oliver. You'll only read this if you're already a Heyer fan, but if you are, rest assured, it is one of her best. And don't be embarrassed, because there are a lot of us about who admire her wit and style. Certainly escapism, but definitely An Escapism of Quality!

Wonderful fluff! 4 Sep 2004

A Lady Of Quality is (to a hardened Heyer fan anyway!) a fantastic and fun addition to any library. Romantic and optimistic without ever succumbing to being too twee, this book is a favourite of mine and is likely to remain so indefinitely. Annis Wychwood is the kind of heroine every modern woman aspires to being - beautiful, intelligent, articulate and adored by a rake! The relationship between the two main characters is entirely believable, and entirely uplifting in introducing the concept of conversational sparring between prospective partners. The plot is more plausible than some other Heyer novels, however the sparkling dialogue between Annis and Oliver has to be the main reason for reading this book. I defy any woman to read this book and remain unmoved by romanticism and escapism (with a substantial dash of irony) at their best!

a classic 6 Jan 2003

There are a handful of books on my bookcase which I could stand to read again and again. A Lady of Quality is one of these!

The characters are lively and easy to care about. What's more you really feel that the attraction between the hero and heroine makes sense. So often in 'romance' novels, the hero is so sketchy or cliched that I can't be bothered liking him, or see what on earth the wonderfully characterised heroine sees in the two dimentional man.

Heyer's writing is witty and engaging. I just love it.

Not Georgette Heyer's best book. In fact read this many years ago and hadn't realised at the time how average it really is.
