Synopsis
After the death of King Henry VIII and his young son and heir Edward VI, Henry's 15-year-old great-niece, Lady Jane Grey (Helena Bonham Carter), is chosen to rule by a group of palace conspirators who vow to keep the country Protestant and out of the hands of the Church of Rome. She is crowned, against her will, and her reign lasts only nine days, until Henry's legitimate daughter Princess Mary, by first wife the Catholic Catherine of Aragon, and her supporters rally around and crown her Queen instead. Jane is imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually beheaded, along with her husband, Guildford Dudley (Cary Elwes), for what is presumed to be their part in the conspiracy. The film chronicles, fairly accurately, Jane's growth, during her extremely short reign, from a bookish intellectual to a confident, and politically progressive young woman who refuses to conform to the religious hypocrisies of 16th Century England.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching, 28 May 2006
By Mr. Jeremy N. Harcourt "jh018q3487" (Horley, Surrey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't remember this film at all when it came out and I don't remember it ever being shown on TV, which is a real shame as I think it deserves a wider audience. There are some very fine performances notably from Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes. The acting, costumes and script are generally very good but I found the musical score a little overbearing at times.

The scheming and ambitious John Dudley Duke of Northumberland is the vilain of the piece. He convinces the dying king Edward to change Henry VIII's will and disinherit his sisters Mary and Elizabeth and name Lady Jane as his successor. In my view too little is seen of the young King Edward VI and his sister Mary. Mary is seen giving an early warning to Jane but is next seen riding in triumph to London when Jane's reign is finished. Some other parts of the plot could have been fleshed out a little rather then concentrating on the romance between Jane and Northumberland's son Guildford Dudley.

The idealism of the young queen and her husband make the viewer sympathetic to them. Jane's parents are also shown as ruthless ambitious and greedy, her mother the Duchess of Suffolk portrayed as particulary cruel and unfeeling.

All in all I really enjoyed this film and would strongly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good drama but it adds pointless romance., 20 Aug 2007
By little_miss_sunnydale (South Gloucestershire, England) - See all my reviews
'Lady Jane' concerns the life of Jane Grey who in 1553 was briefly placed upon the English throne after Henry VIII's will of succession was altered, 'reigned' for little over a week, then deposed and eventually came to a tragic end. The film begins in 1552 and finishes in 1554.

Certain aspects of this drama is good; they include little events that are believed to have occurred, for example Jane's refusal to bow to the consecrated Host and the horrified reaction by one of Mary I's ladies due to this; her seclusion from the hunting party by reading Plato and then being discovered by Doctor Feckenham and later her dismay over her proposed marriage. So on the surface the film appears to be highly informative.

However the main mistake of the film is probably the aspect of the film that many viewers actually like the most; the love story between Jane and Guildford. At first appearance there is nothing to dislike about this; after all, we know what is going to happen to Jane and Guildford so it is comforting to see that in their last years they found marital bliss. But this comfort is actually on reflection slightly inappropriate as it takes away the real tragedy that was Jane's life. We know from contemporary sources that she decided to seek comfort, in her last days, in religion, rather than her husband. They actually did not bond and she prevented a meeting between them before their executions. So it is disappointing why the producers chose to create this love story. While religion is certainly covered in this (and often very well), it would have been better if they decided to actually show Jane's story and her increasing fascination and comfort in the Protestant faith. Instead they went slightly 'Hollywood' and stuck in a romance.

Casting though on the whole is good. Helena Bonham Carter, a superb actress, gives yet again a dedicated performance as Jane. It's great to see Patrick Stewart in this and Doctor Feckenham and Frances Grey are casted well. The main disappointments are the casting of Mary I and John Dudley. While it is a pleasant change to see a sympathetic and compassionate Mary, the actress is too old to play her. John Dudley is portrayed as slightly sinister and it a shame to have to vilify him yet again, even though opinion on him as been revised by historians for over thirty years. But when you are watching something on Jane Grey chances are that the man who is believed to have dragged her into the whole mess will tend to be viewed as the villain.

Overall the drama is fantastic about getting little details correct and (mostly) is effective at fully discussing the controversial issue of divisions in religion in 1550s England. It even mentions economic problems in the 1550s which is slightly adventurous for a movie. Take in mind that the film was made in the late 1980s so compared to modern dramas on the Tudors this production may seem slightly old fashioned to some. But on the whole it is a good drama. The main disappointment will remain the pointless love story that the producers have added that has ended up taking away a vital element of Jane's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Tudor drama of intrigue and love, 23 Dec 2005
By pointone (Bournemouth UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This excellent historical drama charts the life of Lady Jane Grey who was illegally declared Queen of England following the death of Edward V1, reigned for nine days and eventually executed.

The political intriguing are accurate, as well as Jane’s relationship with her parents, as is the scene where she is declared Queen.

Helena Bonham Carter is a perfect choice for Jane and bears a considerable likeness to a portrait of her, and Cary Elwes is excellent as her husband Guildford Dudley. The scenes between them are irresistible as they move from antagonism to love, and the last hour they are allowed together the night before their executions is devastating. Unfortunately their relationship in the film is almost certainly inaccurate, probably a complete reverse of the truth, additionally Jane’s confinement in the Tower is well documented and there is no mention anywhere of them meeting when imprisoned. However it would be a flinty hearted historian that begrudged us this touching love story, for once I say to hell with history.

The film is a feast of fine acting, sets and costumes, photography and direction. For all lovers of historical films this is a must.
