I always love the historical romances because they have an extra layer of intrigue to them - perhaps it's because of the differences in manners, behaviours and customs of the period in which they are set.

Lady Dru decides to set off alone (that's a no-no for a start), to chase her wayward sister and her sisters' lover (another definate non-no) to Gretna Green to stop their marriage and to save her sister from disgrace.

Of course, on the way, she becomes more and more likely to become the one who is disgraced as she is forced by circumstances (bad weather, broken cart wheels etc) into situations that leave her virtue open to question. She meets another traveller who initially tries to help her retain her anonimity and get her to her destination, but as the journey progresses, they both end up having to resort to illegal means to fund the journey and find themselves falling in love.

In the end, Lady Dru has a happy ending and it's a jolly good romp of a read till you get there. 5 stars.

lacks interest 2 Aug 2011

This book was readable and quite good for passing time on a journey. It was however rather lacklustre. the plot was essentially boy meets girl, boy marries girl with a little bit of a twist. The characters were unable to engage my interest and Im not sure that they really liked each other. On the plus side it is easy to read and small enough to fit into handbag if travelling

There is no denying that M&B can produce excellent historical romances. The tried and tested formula is part of what makes them such a success.

This book has a nice twist to it, which improved on the basic formula which has the hero always being a member of the aristocracy, and the heroine is always a young lady on the cusp of womanhood. It would be difficult to give more details without ruining the story. Suffice it to say that Lady Drusilla is the sort of heroine where you wish you could slap her family into next week for taking advantage of her good nature.

An excellent example of M&B at its best.
