Product Description

BBC Review

Known primarily in the chill out/dance world for her superlative appearances on albums by UK bands Zero 7 and Massive Attack, Australian chanteuse Sia Furler has enjoyed a healthy amount of success on her own, notably with solo albums such as 2000's Healing Is Difficult (Sony) and 2003's Colour The Small One.

Having raised her profile still further with the hauntingly beautiful 'Breathe Me,' (used in the final scene of the Six Feet Under series), Sia recently completed a sell-out tour of the States, re-released Colour The Small One and also found time to record a new live album: Lady Croissant.

Recorded at NYC's famed Bowery Ballroom, Lady Croissant features eight songs plucked from Sia's own albums and the Zero 7 catalogue, and also includes her recent collaboration with Dan Carey, 'Pictures,' - which kicks the album off in heartfelt style.

From this soaring opener, the album sashays through an undulating world of emotion where a, by turns, languorous and assertive soundtrack is matched by Sia's own impassioned vocal style. A rousing (and highly distinctive) rendition of 'Don't Bring Me Down,' a surprisingly faithful version of "Destiny" - one of her finest moments, despite the fact she wasn't scheduled to be the original vocalist - and the potent, if strangely-titled song 'Lentil,' are all executed with an appealing mixture of frankness and fluidity.

'I Go To Sleep,' - a Pretender's classic - proves a wonderful choice for a cover, being well suited to Sia's range and style; and her renditions of 'Breathe Me' and the finale 'Distractions,' (another classic Zero 7 moment) also leave positive impressions of her live capabilities.

But though Lady Croissant reveals the fuller breadth of Sia's vocal versatility, the ardent perfectionism of the band and lack of audience 'atmosphere' (there's just a few handclaps between songs) prevent the album feeling overly much like a 'live' experience.

For newcomers to Sia's work, this is no impediment whatsoever to enjoying the record. Those who already know, love and own the featured songs may find it difficult to justify adding Lady Croissant to their collection. --Paul Sullivan

Record Label

'Lady Croissant' is the new live album from Sia, who is already known to her loyal fanbase from her days as the inspirational vocalist with indie-electro band Zero 7. 'Lady Croissant', recorded live at Bowery Ballroom in NYC, has been confirmed for release on EMI Records on May 7th. This is Sia's third album as a solo Artist and she has just completed a sold out tour in the US.

'Lady Croissant' includes songs from both Sia's solo career and Zero 7 and this live album captures Sia performing such songs as new studio track 'Pictures', 'Numb', 'Breathe Me', as well as a cover of The Pretenders song, 'I Go To Sleep'. The full track listing is:

2006 was a busy year all around, with the song 'Breathe Me' being featured in the unforgettable final scene of the Six Feet Under series finale. The US release of her album 'Colour The Small One' saw Sia cited by Rolling Stone as one of "10 Artists To Watch" and she was called "...as soothing as an aromatherapy candle" by People magazine.

Sia is widely known for her ethereal voice from chill-out group Zero 7. 'Lady Croissant' is Sia's first live CD recorded live at Bowery Ballroom in New York.

'Pictures' is the studio track which is much more upbeat than her usual stuff a really sweet song what a great song- about trying to let go of someone that has hurt you though you still love them. but maybe, no matter how hard you try the thought of her stays with you because you believe they're the one.

The live album really starts with the fantastic song 'Don't Bring Me Down' one of my favourite all time songs the song isn't as intimate and fragile as the album version the song is about coming down from being on Exstacy and feeling depressed and low. I love it, theres not much change with her voice as a inclination that she is just a natural singer.

'Destiny' is a song that was made famous by Zero 7 she sings the song with Sophie Barker on the album but on this it's just her on her own great version.

'Blow It All Away' was from her debut and one of the best songs from it!

It was a pretty loud song anyway but the live version seems to make it more personal she, as always sounds utterly fantastic the solo piano at the end kills me every time, so pretty.

'Lentil' is my favourite song it's a new song I listen to it so much it's a bit like 'Numb'

but better (even though i love 'Numb' too!). The chorus is so good i love the way the chorus' it's almost like shes mumbling the breaks into a powerful statement of "so I never meant to let you down"

I don't know if theres a studio version if there is i want to hear it!

'Numb' and 'I Go To Sleep' are two of the songs i'm not overly keen on the former is great but i prefer the studio version for some reason and the latter is a Pretenders cover which I have to say i've never been a fan of the group, it's not bad and i do listen to it but could have sung 'Rewrite' or 'Sweet Potato' in it's place.

'Breathe Me' starts off a bit like Cat Power's song 'Maybe Not' i almost didn't recognize it now I like many other people LOVE this song but I didn't feel as touched by this version at the album even though it is one of the most beautifully honest songs ever recorded I think people take to this song because every one on the planet feels like this we all are vulnerable, insecure and scared people if anyone says otherwise is probably lying, Love this song, she truly captured raw emotion.

The last track is a great one and a favourite of mine 'Distractions' was my first taster of Sia a few years ago i was watching VH1 and the video came on and fell in love instantly, the live version is great towards the end of the song you hear the real power in her voice i was utterly blown away after the song finished i smiled like a Cheshire cat!

Top 5

1.Lentil

2.Distractions

3.Breathe Me

4.Don't Bring Me Down

5.Pictures

Now if your like me and love anything this woman ever does then i suggest you venture into buying her live set although it only has 9 tracks it's definitely enough, she is truly a remarkable artists support her!.

Live is best 31 July 2007

Lady Croissiant is everything Colour the Small One should have been. Her live performance is both powerful and enchanting. The tracks that failed to inspire on the studio album come to life when performed live. The addition of a couple of Zero 7 classics and a Pretenders cover add to the mix, and you find that 8 live tracks is simply not satisfactory. If you are a Zero 7 follower curious about Sia's post Zero 7 work, then I recommend this CD.

This is a great album of Sia doing what she does best, singing beautiful songs in her own haunting and captivating style. There is a good mix of songs here, the first being a new studio track and the others live. 'Breathe me' is as fantastic as ever and 'Distractions' is simply superb. This is great for late at night, chilling to and completely relaxing with her beautiful voice. Well worth a go, if you're new to Sia or already completely hooked.
