Will he surrender his kingdom for a kiss?

They call him Conn of the Hundred Battles, the warrior-king who forged a nation from a land of isolated clans. As High King of Ireland, he rides with the legendary Fianna, his elite band of warriors. But a threat to the throne looms from a mysterious enemy who has vanquished several of Conn's bravest warriors. Conn rides out alone to face a seemingly invincible foe, never dreaming he will find a grief-maddened hellcat with emerald eyes and hair like liquid flame...

Wielding a sword called Vengeance, Gelina Ó Monaghan has sworn to defeat the man she holds responsible for her family's ruin. She never dreams she will be captured by him--and lose her heart in the bargain. Their forbidden passion will spark a private war fought with swords and kisses, promises and betrayal...until they discover the sweetest surrender of all in each other's arms.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good love story! 17 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When I first bought this book I didn't think that I was going to like it. This story if full of mixed emotions. Conn is dominant and powerfull and Gelina is too! Thier love is unique in every way. Conn's misjudgement of Gelina is realistic. I believe that if anyone finds themselves in the same situation probably they would have reacted the same way. I loved it when one of the characters said " I know the question we didn't ask, Gelina" Because all through the book nobody even cares to ask her anything. They just judged her without a backward glance. And, isn't it just like that in the real world??
The only thing that I didn't like overly much was the ending. I find that Medeiros could have extended the book so it had an epilogue, that way we could have known how happy they lived after their traumatic love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars As usual, this author writes a fantastic romance 11 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Defeating ones enemy in battle seems to be a simple task for Conn of the Hundred Battles and his loyal men, the Fianna, a fierce warrior group of big, tough males. As Conn becomes the High King of Ireland, ruling over the many clans, a threat arises from nowhere. Someone has defeated several of Conn's best knights in combat.

Conn knows that he must defeat this new threat by himself if he is to keep his honor and consequently continue to rule the land. However, he is shocked when his deadly, invincible opponent turns out to be the beautiful Gelina O'Monaghan, a woman with a quest. She has vowed to destroy the individual responsible for ruining her family--Conn. As they duel with swords, they begin to fall in love. However, love seems doomed since he is her sworn enemy and neither trusts the other one.

LADY OF CONQUEST will conquer the most discriminating of Camelot fans with its fast-paced, action-packed, and Arthurian-like story line. Conn is a character of epic proportions and Gelina is an intrepid individual who Xena would not mind following. The secondary cast, especially the Fianna warriors, add depth to a Medieval romance whose touch of enchantment turns it into one of the most enchanting tales of the year and makes Teresa Medeiros everyone's darling.

I didn't expect to like this book that much. If you read enough of this genre you discover that there are only so many ways to tell the same love story. I grabbed this book on my way to get the oil changed in my car, expecting to have a long boring wait. As it turned out I didn't get a chance to start reading until I got home, which was a good thing. I read it cover to cover in one sitting.
Not having done extensive research on this particular time period myself, I cannot attest to the accuracy of the setting. However it was one of the most well written books I've read in a while. I've been reading romance for years and am well past the time where the love scenes actually leave me breathless, but these did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent historical 30 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I was hesitant to buy this book when I realized it was a reprint from 1989, but boy am I glad I did! I'd read all of Medeiros's most recent books and this one delivered on their promise and then some. Conn and Gelina were very passionate, both in their loving and their warring, but I found that refreshing because so many romance seem stilted and politically correct these days. I fell in love with these characters and with their story! I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate and wonderful! 12 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I loved this book! I knew it was one of Medieros's earlier efforts so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I found it filled with all of the qualities I've loved about her newer books--delightful humor, whimsy, passion and a romance that is truly for the ages. It's one of my favorite books of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that stays with you 8 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was a very entertaining read. There may have been some holes in the story as far as weather and setting, but the people in the story were wonderful and full character. Teresa Medeiros is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 13 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Started off enjoying this book, kept waiting for it to get better, but kept getting worse. The storyline just seemed to disintegrate, like the author was grasping at straws or in a hurry to finish a book she really had no ending for.
When Conn turns on Gelina on their wedding day (isn't he supposed to love this woman?)for supposedly killing Nimbus (someone she truly cared for and was her friend), without so much as a why or explantion of motive, is the time I really got disgusted with the book. From then on, bad became worse and the ending finally killed what could have been a very good story.
I can't see how anyone can rate this book with 5 stars - 2 is being overly generous.
