2.0 out of 5 stars Too predictable to be true, 16 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Ladies' Man (Paperback)
This book had me interested at first and started out with some very witty lines. About one-third of the way through i suspected what would happen at the end and to my huge dissapointment, it came through. The gay/straight contemplation is a valid one but the opportunity that presents itself at the end for Simon is too rediculously convenient to be true. Crap, sappy ending by a first-time author.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's not only simon who's surprised, 16 Feb 2001

This review is from: Ladies' Man (Paperback)
john ramster skillfully avoids all the potential pitfalls inherent in taking a gay character and straightening him out, as it were. he could be accused of being unrealistic, but simon is utterly believable. his infatuation for ruth makes perfect sense. he doesn't make the mistake of taking a character and turning him upside down, he just extends his personality. simon is anything but perfect, and he doesn't hide his weaknesses from us - weaknesses that make the novel a thoroughly funny read, somewhat tempered by two scenes that - without warning - pack a hell of a punch. in spite of all the humour the topics broached are taken seriously and how ramster pulls off this double challenge is well worth the five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love is more than gay or straight, 20 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ladies' Man (Paperback)
This book might be summed up as a light, fun, summer read for romantic bisexuals but that would be too simplistic. The fun is there, but the open-minded might also see some tough honesty about the human condition and a young person's search for love. Does sexual orientation matter in the struggle to balance selfishness and selflessness in a relationship? The author thinks not. If you agree, you will probably find this book charming. If you don't agree, or if you are squeamish about some brief male/male sex encounters, this book is probably not for you.
