Patricia Routledge is Vera Small and Prunella Scales is her bosom buddy Irene Spencer. The two pass their time in regular correspondence and not an even goes by that is left unrecorded by the ladies of letters. They begin with a cheerful exchange of recipes but it's not long before all kinds of intimacies are imparted. Firstly there are the usual family problems to discuss, then there are the accusations of alcoholism and mental illness which the two bat at each other like ping pong balls. Often critical of each other (though always in a loving, caring way - of course) their hilarious put-downs create a wonderful insight into the ups and downs of family life today.

The writing and the performance of this relationship it so beautifully done, that it is a pleasure to listen to it and I know I will be getting it out to listen to again real soon.

I heard the Ladies of Letters series on radio when they were first broadcast on Woman's Hour and they are brilliant! The audio book includes the first two series: Ladies of Letters and Ladies of More Letters and is great value. Buy it for a good laugh, can't wait for the next series which is broadcast next week(ie 17/7/00)

Is this supposed to be funny? If so, there's something seriously wrong with my sense of humour because I never found anything to laugh at.
It's far from witty, I wouldn't even class it as farce, it's even too stupid for that. I'm amazed that such good actresses as Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge got involved with the series at all.
Thank goodness I didn't waste more money on the DVD or the CD and chose the cheapest option which was 2 cassette tapes to listen in bed. I endured one and a half sides of the first tape then I fell asleep from boredom and in the morning the tapes went to the Charity shop for them to get rid of.
