Blues legend B.B. King has been spending time this year thinking about "The B.B. King That Was." There is his bricks, mortar and memory project down in a Mississippi blues crossroads, his very own B.B. King Museum, which acknowledges his past. And then, his new Geffen Records CD One Kind Favor which puts the blues maestro in competition, not with other players, but. himself. ... Read more in Amazon's B.B. King Store

Product Description

"B.B. King is one of America's few, long-standing musical treasures, whose stature has grown to an unassailable, international level. Despite being 85, King continues to tour, perform and grow in influence, casting a shadow that reaches far beyond the blues scene from whence he first came. His warm, down-home vocal style, his distinctive, talking blues guitar playing, and his songs that sing of love's joys and hardships such as "Sweet Sixteen", "How Blue Can You Get?", "Help The Poor", "The Thrill Is Gone" and countless others are all indelibly imprinted elements in the modern musical heritage."--Ashley Kahn

King's 50th Anniversary signing to ABC-Paramount Records in 1962 this boxset is a slick 10 CD, 194 track collection chronicling his entire career from his first recordings in 1949 through to his most recent studio album. The set is packed with glorious images and memorabilia, illustrating the musician's career, all lovingly assembled and with mastering supervised by Grammy Award-winning consultants Bill Levenson and Andy McKaie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 29 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I just adore BB King, but this boxed set supersedes King Of The Blues and The Early Years.

King of The Blues was great, but it wasn't comprehensive enough: the Early Years (on ace now deleted) did what it said on the tin, and provided a comprehensive overview of BB's recordings from 192-1962, just prior to him leaving ABC. While many of the recordings on The Early Years were re-recorded, even as far as Blues On The Bayou, Riding With The King, and Makin' Love Is Good For You, the Bihari Brothers centred solely on singles for the Chitlin Circuit. Once BB went to ABC, following in the footsteps of Ray Charles, and once Sidney Seiderberg took over as manager, BB became an amazing album artist, providing us with some excellent material.

Add to that, BB King's Live At The Regal, a support gig in 1969 for The Rolling Stones (documented on the 40th Anniversary Get Yer Ya Yas Out), The Thrill Is Gone, and albums recorded in London, with Stevie Wonder, Bobby Bland, and The Crusaders, and BB becomes the ambassador of the blues. However, the feeling is that BB King thoroughly deserves it, and this boxed set only accentuates just how much he does.

BB King, like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Billie Holliday, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, inhabits every song that he records, be it Willie Dixon's Don't Go No Further, Tony Bennett's On My Word of Honour, Roy Hawkins' The Thrill Is Gone, Blind Lemon Jefferson's See That My Grave is Kept Clean, Clarence Carter's Back Door Santa, Lowell Fulson's Three O Clock Blues and Reconsider Baby. Some of his albums haven't been too great, i.e. Love Me Tender, and, like many artists, he went through a bad patch in the late 80s, only to bounce back with There Is Always One More Time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree 100 per cent 12 Nov 2012

With the other reviewer. I also have the mid-90's 4 cd set King Of The Blues, but this leaves that standing. About as comprehensive as you can get for an artist that's been around for over 60 years. Yes there may be omissions, you can't please all the people, all of the time. But for a brilliant over view of BB's long career this set certainly deserves 5 stars. And what value compared to prices I have seen in High Street stores
