Format: Audio CD
Alma Cogan was Britain's brightest female star half-a-century ago, and her sparkling, effervescent voice continues to generate joy through her recordings so many years after her premature death. Her commercial recordings have been released and reissued in many forms over the past six decades, but this compilation is quite unique.

There are 58 recordings taken from the enormously popular BBC radio show "Take It From Here" and a number of rare, previously unissued, demo records which add great value to this double CD set. There are no less than 72 tracks; the majority under two minutes each as allotted to her on the broadcasts. "That's What A Rainy Day Is For" and "I Love The Way You Say Goodnight" come from a 1954 broadcast on which Alma guested with the Billy Ternent Orchestra. Alma duets with Billy, who was a better bandleader than singer, and they interact rather charmingly.

It has to be said that Alma was given a fair amount of trivial material to sing, but she could turn the most banal lyric into something entertaining and worth listening to. This was a rare gift, as was her fabulous voice.

The accompanying booklet is richly illustrated with excellent texts and recording details. All the recordings from "Take It From Here" (1953-1956) are listed with their broadcast dates. Most demo recordings and alternate takes are undated, but clearly take us into the Swinging Sixties.

The remastering is first rate with great sound quality throughout. This is an excellent production which is sure to become a collector's item in years to come. Best to get your copy now!
