Product Description

Made in 1965, this film provides a portrait of the young Leonard Cohen when he was on the brink of pop stardom. Cohen's first poetry collection had been published in 1956, but it was 'The Spice Box of Earth' which made him famous in 1961. Two years after this film was made, Cohen found success with his first album, 'The Songs of Leonard Cohen', and he has since been hailed as the first and last post-war romantic writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introduces us to a new side of Cohen 7 Jan 2002
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This CD is indeed an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys the work of Leonard Cohen. Be warned though - this is from the mid 1960's, so we're talking about Cohen the poet here, not Cohen the musician. Without doubt the most enjoyable section of the disc comes in the opening 10 minutes however, where we a treated to some rare footage of Cohen effectively doing stand-up comedy. He is so funny during this sequence that you are left wishing that there was more of the same, but even so this DVD comes highly recommended to all fans of the great man's work.

A very period feel about this film.It brings out the bohemian atmosphere of Montreal in the 60`s and shows very vividly the humour of the man.Do not expect any songs, although there are tempting references to Marianne. Some scenes are very contrived but these are worth tolerating. Considering where the songwriter is now it shows what a long journey he has taken.Oh that we had more films to fill in the gaps. A must for those who know that Cohen is more than `Bed-sit gloom`.

Made this purchase for my Dad who has recently discovered the talents of Leonard Cohen. He's not a poetry buff by any means but is thorougly enjoying this DVD showing his earlier work and personal stories.
