Product Description

Product Description

A 7-year-old girl gazes out of her bedroom window, and makes a wish to climb right up in the sky and dance with the stars. A star hears her wish and makes a plan with the moon, the sun and the wind, who plant a seed in the corner of the little girl's garden. A tree begins to grow, until 100 years later it towers up into the sky. The little girl is now an old, old lady of 107. One evening she is kept awake by the same star, who has remembered the wish of long ago and invites her to climb the tree and come and dance. So, despite her aching back and trembling limbs, the old lady rubs her hands on the bark for luck, and begins to climb... This is a lyrical, mystical tale about the passing of time and regeneration, with exquisite and magical illustrations by Alison Jay.

A beautifully written and ultimately life-affirming story that will encourage children to dream and believe dreams can come true. The writing is rich and imaginative, appealing to a child's ear for rhythm and alliteration, and the illustrations complement the text to create a work of art to be enjoyed by children and their parents. This story of a little girl's wish come true can be read in more than one way, and lends itself to discussions with your children about death and what happens after death. However the author is careful to avoid over-sweetening the character of the old lady - like real-life grannies, she can have a grumble too.

Pretty cool 22 Sep 2004

This book was certainly not what I expected it to be. I wasn't sure my 2 yr old would understand it but I read it anyway and, to my amazement, she saw things I didn't. Now everytime we read it she finds something new to comment on. A very thought provoking book, reality with a touch hope and imagination.
