The Labtec 800 Optical Wired Mouse sounds good in the promotional material, and looks good both in the promotional images and on the desk. Unfortunately, either it does not suit my Windows XP computer (1GB Ram, 3.2Ghz dual core Pentium) or my computer doesn't suit the mouse. I tried it first with a PS2 connection. Although the left and right buttons and the scroll wheel operated smoothly, tracking was jerky and erratic. I tried several surfaces, including mouse mat, glossy surfaces of different colours and matt surfaces. It seemed slightly better on a grainy, matt black surface, but not by very much. Using it with a USB connection was no improvement and, after a few minutes of use, my computer suffered its first BSOD crash in a very long time. So, the day after receiving the mouse, it's now in a drawer, where it will stay except in case of some emergency.

Having recently upgraded to a MacBook, I wasn't sure how I'd get on with the touchpad (which turned out to be excellent) so picked up this mouse as a stand-by in case I had problems. I should have spent the money on chips for all the good this thing is. The tracking is annoyingly jerky and whilst not tacky, it feels light and insubstantial which goes some way to exacerbate the twitchiness. Also, the centre wheel is loud and conspicuously squeaky.

The worst mouse I've ever used. And I used to have an Amiga.

The Labtec Optical Mouse 800 had really good performance with its 800 dpi optical sensor. It was smooth and precise tracking on almost any surface; you don't even need a mouse pad which is good. A great fit for either right or left hand with a soft grip that is comfortable. You can scroll longer pages with less effort thanks to a convenient wheel.
