Hue And Cry were one of the best Scottish bands of the late 80s and early 90s, whose innovative mix of the popular and the innovative was often overshadowed by other, better known Scottish contemporaries such as Deacon Blue and Wet Wet Wet. As with many bands who have suffered from this unfortunate lack of widespread popularity, a collection of their finest moments gives rise to comments of "Oh, I forgot they did that", or "That's good, I remember it now" From the frontal attack of "Labour of Love" and "Strength to Strength", to the more laid back "Violently" and "Peaceful Face", the diversity of Pat and Greg Kane's musical productions are here for all to remember and sing along to, with traces of jazz, country and even soul to be found. Most of the songs here were released when I first left home for university, and bring back fond memories of bars and clubs in early 90s Glasgow, but also remind me of how good the music scene used to be, before boy bands and American teen starlets took over the charts. So if you want to be reminded of better times, or even just want to hear something a little bit different, then you could do worse then give Hue And Cry a chance - I'm sure you wouldn't regret it.

If you have never heard Hue and Cry, a scottish brother duo that started in the eighties then you have missed an absolute treat.

This album which is a "Best Of" album contains nearly all their best music. From the deep ballads of "Peaceful Face", the fantastic vocals on "Violently" and "Truth", to the ever populat classics of "Ordinary Angels" and "Looking For Linda".

The Kane brothers vocals and harmonies are superb. The clarity of their voices are rich and the album is an absolute delight.

Pat and Greg Kane are undoubtedly Scotland's best kept secret. Pat's vocals are simply stunning, a mix of Sinatra's smoothness, George Michael's majesty and Tom Jones' oomph! A best of CD is perhaps the quickest way in which to familiarise the Hue & Cry virgin with their sounds, but this is but a chapter in their extensive book of music. The selection is good (where is "Strength to Strength" one asks?) from the absolute classic "Labour of Love" to the more recent "Under Neon", so buy and enjoy.....

In a world where marketing triumphs over talent and image prevents ability from coming to the fore, we find ourselves harking back to the golden era of Scottish "pop" music".
Late 80's to mid 90's, Hue And Cry epitomised all that was good and true.
Strong politically sound lyrics, music to make the heart sing and vocals to thaw even the iciest of hearts.
Pat Kane (vocals) had a Sinatra thing going, his vocals were thick with images of a smokey 40's niteclub, resplendent in a white dinner jacket a big band at his back, he is the singer Robbie Williams wished he was when he recorded "Swing When Your Winning", a talent wasted because of his refusal to sell out and Michael McBoltonise himself.
Each song is a novella, a story within itself.
I could go on, in short?
Buy it, make yourself a better person.
Rediscover real music.

LOOKING FOR LINDA in this collection is a very engaging song about a wonderful woman called Linda McAllister. This song was actually inspired by meeting Linda McAllister in a pub in Stirling in Central Scotland. She told the two song-writers about herself and her life, and when they left they said they would write a song about her -- and this is it! At the time she was on the brink of becoming an alcoholic and had lost all faith in men. Her life was in tatters and out of control. The song-writers must have been very struck by her because, as the song says, they were always "looking for Linda"! Twenty years went by before Linda reached rock-bottom and in a tipsy state pranced into the Church of Scotland dressed in a low-cut butterfly dress and found a new beginning that changed her life. You can read her story in the collection of testimonies entitled TOUCHED BY ANGELS published by Diadem Books, edited by Charles Muller.

If you're into "Blue Eyed Soul" this album's for you. It ranges from Bluesy to Rockin' Pop. They have slightly different versions of their biggest hits and some songs not available to US customers. I like this compilation but I feel that it's not complete. With their other Greatest Hits called Labour of Love I think that it gives a more complete view of the band before they went down their bluesy jazzy path.

Superb band and superb album, Glasgow at it's best. Evoked instant memories of the eighties, big hair, flying boots and class music - never to be repeated. What more can I say, EXCELLENT - get a copy now, you will not regret it.
