Somewhere in London a musician carries the keys to the musical kingdom. In his Technicolor sonic scope are all kinds of sounds, from rock to country to soul to pop. Nothing is off limits, as long as it has a groove and goodness based in reality. The musician has been performing for 40 years, but is as fresh today as the first time he stepped on stage. There are no tricks or short cuts here. ... Read more in Amazon's Nick Lowe Store

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is New Wave 16 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of my favorite albums of all time, In 1979 I thought this album was such a cool sound, not punk, not retro Rock& Roll but something new, for me it was New Wave, this album was recorded the same time as Dave Edmunds Repeat When Necessary (you need both) there was a TV special called Born Fighters (check it out on youtube) recorded at the time (1978) and I was hoping that would make a bonus DVD for this release but alas no, the bonus tracks that make the cut are the dark and somber Basing Street (b-side of Crackin Up), and single release American Squirm (which replaced Endless Grey Ribbon on the original U.S. lp release) if you want a Deluxe style experience then purchase the Dave Edmunds album to go with it, the two go hand in hand, Just look at that Barney Bubbles cover this is New Wave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Labour Of Lust (Expanded Edition) 8 Jun 2011
By 12stringbassist VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The high-water mark album of Nick Lowe's chequered career features the familiar single version of his biggest hit, 'Cruel to be kind', as well as several other witty songs, all with a great pop twist and the wonderful sheer artistry of Dave Edmunds and Billy Bremner on guitars.

Trivia: Nick Lowe and Rockpile sessioned on Mickey Jupp's Juppanese album (Buy that one too, it's great). They backed him up on his song 'Switchboard Susan'. He hated their cut of it, so Nick bought the tape. It's a standout track on here and Mickey Jupp should have kept it. His loss, our gain.

Fantastic album. Buy it NOW.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Album 1 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not punk but a new wave classic. I have always loved Nick Lowe and this album was recorded with Rockpile which was a classic line up! There are some really strong tracks on this album. The opening Cruel to be Kind keeps me pressing the repeat button as I love the fantastic melody and the sentiment. There are other tracks which stand out on the album but for me Cruel to Be Kind is a good enough reason to buy this by itself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue 27 May 2013
By Sue

I've been waiting for ages for this to be issued on cd and then the release date completely passed by me! The songs vary from 'born fighter' to 'you make me' and it is hard to say what is my favourite track is although 'you make me' must rank highly for the sheer emotion. Labour of lust is a must for those who enjoy earthy no frills rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basher at his best. 2 Mar 2013

What can I say that hasn't already been said in the other reviews. There's not a bad song here and the re-issue is long overdue. This has been a favourite of mine for over 30 years. Buy it with Dave Edmunds 'Repeat when necessary' as they are all of a piece.
