Review

Deakin and Morris cover an enormous amount of ground...At master's level this book provides a wealth of material with plenty of opportunities for further reading and critical analysis. Alison Bone The Law Teacher, Vol 41, No 1 2007

Product Description

Labour law is a highly dynamic and complex field which can be properly understood only in its broader international and historical context. Deakin and Morris: Labour Law, a work increasingly cited as authoritative in the higher appellate courts, provides a comprehensive analysis of current British labour law which explains the role of different legal sources, as well as social and economic policy, in its development. It thus enables readers to obtain a deeper insight into likely future, as well as past, changes in the law. The new edition, while following the broad pattern of previous editions, highlights important new developments in the areas of the contract of employment, discipline and dismissal, discrimination law, EU law, employee representation, human rights, 'work-life balance' policies and industrial action law. The book examines in detail the law governing individual employment relations, with chapters covering the definition of the employment relationship; the sources and regulation of terms and conditions of employment; discipline and termination of employment; and equality of treatment. This is followed by an analysis of the elements of collective labour law - the forms of collective organisation, freedom of association, employee representation, internal trade union government, and the law relating to industrial action. The fourth edition of Deakin and Morris: Labour Law is an essential text for students of law and of disciplines related to management and industrial relations, for barristers and solicitors working in the field of labour law, and for all those with a serious interest in the subject.

As stated above it's a comprehensive review of labour (employment) law history and the law itself. Highly recommended, if a little out of date (it's got an analysis of the now-defunct 2002 Regs in it and wouldn't be suitable for an analysis of Equality law in 2011).

I set this text as standard for my students. It is peerless in labour/employment law.
I wanted to counterbalance the unfair one star review which was here, given because the book never arrived. Indeed, this book is much better when it arrives than when it doesn't, unlike some less reputable crammer texts.

I used this book when I was studying for the Employment Law module of my LLB. When I first bought it I have to admit that I hated it due to the level of detail involved. Through persistence I came to realise very quickly that it is without question the definitive textbook out there on the subject. If as a Law student you are looking to get top marks in your Employment Law studies then this will certainly help matters and through the excellent footnotes will encourage further reading. Highly recommended.
