This is the second edition of this authorative, yet concise book. The first edition had a reprint run within 12 months and now Mr Griffin has added four new chapters and has doubled the number of case studies to 35. The book's minor title is 'The Laboratory Design Process from start to finish' and it really does detail every aspect of this process, even down to the expertise needed in the project team. The early chapters contain the essentials to developing the design brief, contract documentation and construction management. The remaining chapters then go through all the components such as site, structure, furniture, services and instrument requirements. I particularly appreciated the helpful hints and observations, obviously gleaned from 15 years experience in designing modern laboratories. The new chapters cover issues that are now almost fundamental to all modern building design: cost contral, environmental design and occcupational health and safety. The book is generously illustrated with laboratory floor plans and furnishing designs. There are also 28 colour plates from many laboratories featured in the 35 case studies from Australia and overseas. The studies are a unique feature of this book which makes it such a useful reference source. I found I could relate to the sequence in which chapters were presented. The novice will begin by trying to understand the empirical needs in designing a laboratory. Then consider the details, such as benches, layout and functionality. There is then a great desire to examine some 'real' laboratories to reinforce or modify the hypothesis developed so far. This is all presented to you in a very lucid form. I believe this book is important reading for anyone contemplating laboratory renovations and essential if involved in planning a new laboratory.
