Dr. Alex Beenyman (Addison) is the last sane man in the Arnolfini Research Laboratory, and he’d be really, really good at his job if it wasn’t for the dypsomaniac professor (Geoffrey McGivern). And the giant snails. And his space cadet best friend (Josephine Enright). And the egg-hurling protestors. Oh, and the borderline psychopathic lab technician (Dan Tetsell). And the indoor blizzards. And his unfathomable, dutch boss (Selina Cadell), come to that. And the man in the pink mohair jumper and purple leggings in suspended animation in the back room. And the mardy secretary (Helen Moon). And, of course, the fact that he’s really, really not very good at his job.
“Hilarious - like The Goodies at its best” --Harry Hill

Lab Rats - The formula for laughs,
By
This review is from: Lab Rats [DVD] (DVD)
This is a very enjoyable sitcom following the adventures of a group of research scientists as they go about their lives. Packed full of absurd characters in absurd situations, the inclusion of a bit of science gives a rich vein of comedy material ready for mining.
Chris Addison is perfect as Dr. Beenyman, slightly bemusedly trying to cope with what life and his colleagues throw at him. Geoff McGivern (who also starred in Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, which has clearly influenced some if the humour found here) is a suitably weird and drunk senior professor. Jo Enright is a memorably dippy lab assistant Cara, and Selina Cadell stands out as the rather odd Dean. A strange bunch of characters, but as someone who works in a research lab I can attest that they all have their real life counterparts in labs up and down the country... All six episodes of the first series are presented here, in 16:9 widescreen and with no extras. Here's hoping there's a second series soon.

Silly, but cratfed and clever,
This review is from: Lab Rats [DVD] (DVD)
I didn't really know of Chris Addison before this series, but I was intrigued by the trailers.
I'm glad I watched... and I've been waiting for the DVD ever since (already ordered!). As I have said in he title, Lab Rats is a bit silly, sometimes a bit obvious - and no worse for it - but often deceptively clever. Selina Cadell's Dean grows on you... it's one of those odd things that actually get funnier the more you persevere... and all the characters are caricatures. Accept this and you will derive even more from the gags. And there are gags... some visual, some vocal, as well as crafted silliness that in at least on episode takes the entire half hour to create... I'll just say trapeze. My favourite visual gag concerns the retinal scanner... and I'll say no more than that also. I only don't give this five stars because I don't think this will be everyones cup of tea... but if you like your silliness... go for it!!!

At first you think: is this for real? Then you need to pick yourself up from the floor and try not to keep laughing. Unusual and brilliant.
