LaCie HD Media Player 10 Nov 2010
By Paul31
This is a great way to get rid of your stock of DVDs. Plugged the player in via the supplied HDMI cable and connected it to my router, which fortunately is right behind my tv. Once switched on, it went through a quick set up. Went onto the LeCie website to check for any software updates. Downloaded the avaliable update, put it onto my flash drive, plugged into player and the rest it did itself. With the update, you can now select a time point at which to start a film.

Once all this was done, checked on my laptop to see if the device was being picked up by my network, and sure enough, there it was. Getting files onto the player couldn't have been easier. Just copy and paste from computer to player. File was sent over without any problem.

Have played movies using the 3 ways available. Haven't tried it with anything other than mp4 h264 files yet but it played these without missing a beat, even over my wireless network. I even played a movie whilst doing a network transfer without any effect on playback.

I only had 1 issue which I quickly over came. When trying to stream a movie over my network, the player wouldn't connect to Windows Media Server (using Windows 7), mainly because I didn't know where to find my user name and password (it's probably simple when I find out what it is and where to find it). I over came this issue by installing Twonkymedia server onto my laptop. Once installed, set up the folder options and then checked the player again. Sure enough, all my movie files were there ready to be watched.

My only niggle with this product is something that has been mentioned in reviews on other websites. The remote lets the product down. The player itself is a classy, well built product, ley down by a cheap, plasticky remote.

Overall, an excellent piece of kit that slot into the modern home networking set up

This product is absolutely brilliant . It plays all hd files and all music files. The picture and sound is spot on. DTS sound through optical cable. One bad point about this product is that the remote control is small and it takes time to get use to.It also play ripped bluray disk m2ts files up to 50 gigs or more without any problems.Highly recommended product.

Does what it says on the tin and is a great way of backing up literally everything you could amass.

Currently have LaCie hooked up to the main TV and onto the network, Xbox 360 PS3 both laptops and the base unit can all access her at once and stream to whereever needed.

You can change files, delete files and add files even not directly connected through the network which makes things simpler as the USB connection cable is somewhat short if your having to sit and transfer files sitting on the floor directly infront of the TV.

The Menu system is a simpler version to what you might find on the windows media center or the PS3 dashboard. Simple easy to use and very user friendly.

When the batteries in the controller start to die it will be somewhat unresponsive more so than normal remotes you know can stay alive for ages before giving up completely. CHange straight away and your back to flawless viewing.

Always disconnect from Lacie when you have connected directly otherwise this will cause her to freeze and remain "in use by another device" preventing from anyone on the network accessing anything.

Also when you switch her off, immediately drops into a standby mode. If for whatever reason LaCie is unresponsive and the remote is fine, turning the power off from the mains and reconnecting seems to do the job.

Thanks for reading

Steven
