Why buy this ?
People who don't back up end up losing their data eventually, and a lot of time and money goes into that data. With this drive you can back up all your data, stick it in your pocket and leave it in your office desk, for secure offsite backup. It is possible to use this drive for a bootable Mac backup, which is not possible with every hard drive.
Capacity ?
At time of writing this is the largest capacity rugged drive from La Cie. There was a similar capacity drive the Rugged XL that was far bulkier, and required to be plugged into the mains, so not very portable. That one seems to have been discontinued. If you do want to go for the biggest capacity drive then probably easiest to double check the La Cie website to check what they are making.
Portability ?
Small enough to fit into your jacket pocket, well a big pocket. Robust, but the rubber bumper is a bit flimsy. It will run without a power cable, it draws power from either USB or FireWire. There is an extra cable that would allow you to draw more power from USB but I've not needed to use it yet. I would however caution that it does draw down power from a laptop quickly so it might be impractical to use extensively without any power sockets for your laptop.
Connections ?
Firewire is quicker, so if you have the connections then it is worth having, but getting a drive with Firewire is more expensive.
Reliability ?
I am onto my seventh La Cie drive, one was wonky on arrival and after some aggravation with customer support I did get a replacement.
Extras ?
As ever with La Cie this comes with a good assortment of decent cables. Not the longest cables I have seen, but perfectly adequate for a portable drive.
A lot of people feel very strongly about hard drives, this is expensive, but it is sturdy and attractive. Backing up your data just might save you a lot of money.

Does the job - Plain & Simple.
After looking, researching and comparing, this drive came out on top over it's competitors....Why ?
1. Bus Drive... no need for separate power cable, adaptor, etc.
2. Obviously you just can't beat the speed of Firewire 800. So, its good to have all 3 possibilities, USB 2.0, Firewire 400 & 800 speeds.
3. I have found that other external drives always needed a protective case. This drive is rugged enough to go in and out of your travel bag without fear of scratching the unit. Therefore you save money in not purchasing an external case of which can be lost, plus and additional case adds to the original weight and dimensions of the external drive.

This is a pretty simple product, an external hard disk for backing up my PC. It has a silver casing with orange rubber beading to give it some protection. That makes it quite ugly, but it holds 1Tb, and that's what I wanted.
I don't know whether it will be reliable. I have used external hard disks in the past, in a humid climate, and not encountered any problems. If I do, I will post it here.
It comes with a variety of faster cables, but the standard USB cable requires a separate USB cable for power, so you need two spare USB ports, whereas the faster cables combine both the power and data functions.
God, it's ugly.
