Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm very happy with this device, which does even more than it says on the box.
I chose it because it includes Macintosh software and because the Firewire connection interface gives me complete independence from my Macintosh internal DVD/CD drive, which is failing progressively. Purchasing this unit is far less hassle than a warranty repair and altogether cheaper than a repair outside warranty.
Installation of the software wasn't 100% intuitive and wasted a few minutes of my time but, considering the benefits and considering that it seems to be as good and solid as LaCie products were many years ago when they gave me exceptionally good service, I don't think the minor annoyance is worth deducting a star. You need to know that you're supposed to run the software installation packages from the CD supplied and not after copying them to a hard disk, that's all.
It comes with USB and Firewire cables, by the way.

Ordered it on Friday afternoon and was up and using it on Saturday morning. Bought it to replace my increasingly unreliable built-in MacMini DVD writer and have been delighted with it. The unreliability of my MacMini drive meant that I could not use it to load the enclosed CD software, but I connected the LaCie anyway and used it to read its own disc quite happily. With a software load and a computer re-start all is working fine.
The enclosed software includes the main DVD writing software which is not a program in itself but basically enables other Mac programs such as the Finder, iTunes, iDVD, iMovie etc to write straight to it. Thus I can create a Burn Folder in the Finder and burn my DVD on the LaCie, or else fire up Toast (Basic version enclosed with this machine) and burn from that. Similarly I could burn directly from iTunes or whatever I wished.
Point to note for Mac users is that if you are creating a Burn Folder you should not be put off by the apparent appearance of Alias icons. The original file is burned to disc, not the alias.
