Just bought one and I'm very happy with it.
The quality of films when you play it over the TV is very good, probably thanks to HDMI (didn't know what it was before I bought this...).
The device looks very neat and the remote is not too fancy, too.
What I like also is that it switches completely off - no standby and that way no power consumption. At first I thought it was broken because you have to switch it on by the remote control if you connect it to the TV. Took a wee while till I figured it out (didn't read the manual I have to admit).
Easy handling - don't have to install any software on your computer - just plug it into your PC or the TV and it works.
Love it!

I have had this product one week. My intention was to copy my CD collection to the hard disc for play back through a good Hi-Fi system using the SPDIF digital out connection via an off board DAC, without any loss of playback quality. I was attracted to the 1TB hard disc capacity which would allow the storage of many hundreds of CDs, particularly in un-compressed form. The digital out should allow the best possible playback. However in a Hi-Fi sense I find the product fatally flawed as it is only possible to copy to the hard disc drive in compressed and 'lossy' formats, ie. MP3 and basic WMA. I had hoped it would at least copy to one lossless format. Play back compared to CD is noticably inferior.

I have contacted LaCie to check if the unit can be upgraded via a download. They have advised that this is not possible with this model, which they regard as entry level. I have to conclude that without the ability to copy in any lossless format, then high quality playback is impossible, if the source material is in low bit-rate compressed form.

I have tried to copy six separate films, three were successful, one added the director's commentary with no means to remove it, the second the dialog was in Norwegian and the final one the French version

The menus are to say the least 'clunky' and very basic.

In other senses the unit is neat and attractively designed, appears to be well made and at a reasonable price. A variety of leads are included.

Sadly, for my intended purpose, it has proved unsatisfactory. I am dissapointed with this product and regret my purchase. Not recommended for similar use.

The LaCinema Classic is a real gem. I have put all my movies and TV shows onto this and it plays back with no loss of quality. The menu screens are easy to use and you can create your own folder structures. Playback is quite quick (5-10 secs) to start playing a movie and the sound is fine. Transfering files is simple and quick, simply drag and drop in windows explorer. A couple of downsides - the remote is a bit small and could be laid out better but no biggie for me. Lastly, you will have to find a bit of software to convert your original DVD disc movies as it doesn't support VOB/ISO files. Overall I am really pleased with this and as it is small abd black, you can't even see it on my black TV stand.

I had hoped that this nice looking black box featuring a nice looking blue
led would play more than the very limited handful of files that any cheap
sub £20 dvd player from Asda can manage!
Even though it looks promising having a 1080p HDMI OUT it wont play mov files and
as for anything recorded on a hd camcorder forget it!
Even files recorded on a standard definition digital camcorder wont play
until you convert them into mp4 at a quality and bit rate so low that
the results a comparable to footage shoot with a good mobile phone.
As for playing music it wont play wav files so you will have to convert
those into a lossy format such as mp3 or wma!
Plus it wont find a lot of files and photos that are stored on its huge
1 terrabyte hard disk drive, but you will find that the files are still
present and accessible by connecting a computer then looking with windows explorer!
I would have given it 2 stars but since it has crashed a few times each time
requiring me to get up and disconnect it from the mains in order to reset it!
And as I cannot give it none! It only gets 1 star.

I had been pondering over buying a product like this for a few months. After looking at all the options, I chose this one as it seemed good value for money, and is a brand I have bought before.
I am really pleased with my choice as it does everything I want, and does it well. It's very easy to use, just connect to your pc, drag and drop films, music or photos, then plug into the TV, choose an av channel and it's there. With it's huge 1TB capacity I can store all my favourite media in one place and take it everywhere. It looks really good too, and the remote is neat and simple to use.
I highly recommend this product, you get a quality product for a very reasonable price, the only down point is the mains plug is quite bulky, but this is because it's a 2 pin type with a uk attachment provided.

I purchased this as a simple way of viewing pictures and watching the odd video. Well, firstly I couldn't get the user interface to display either via HDMI or composite. Eventually I disconnected the USB lead, and bang! Up came the menu, not the best, but simple I suppose. So it worked but as I see it, you must unplug the USB cable whenever you wish to use this as a media player, then reattach to load or delete files. Unless mine just happened to be faulty then this is ridiculous. The remote is very flakey, a bit hit and miss for the time I used it. Then we come to the file format support, very poor. I couldn't get anything to play! The FAT32 system doesn not allow files over 4Gb to be copied either, (not really LaCie's fault I guess). The photos were not displayed particularly well, even though HD jpeg ws used. The images were noisey and incorrectly sized. All in all, it lasted 3 hours and was returned.
