Product Description

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Crimes under the sun... 4 Mar 2003
First book in a series of three (Total Kheops, Chourmo, Solea), this detective novel is Jean-Claude Izzo's masterpiece (with the exception of his last book "Le soleil des mourants", not yet translated in english). Introducing the character of Fabio Montale, a marginal policeman of italian origin, this novel as been adapted for French TV and lately cinema. It is a real page-turner.
The late Jean-Claude IZZO has been recognised as the true initiator of a new trend in French crime stories: "le Polar Marseillais" (Crime stories set in Marseille). The relationship between IZZO and Marseille was such that the city is not only the setting of the book but a true character in the novel. Marseille, second largest and oldest city in France (2600 years of history), appears in every page in all its complexity: welcoming yet secretive, merry yet though and criminal, mosaic composed by several waves of immigration (I have a passion for my home town and I am afraid it shows!).
Read this book, get lost in its tortuous story, discover a world where everything is mixed up (hence the title meaning "complete mess" in local slang), where people are neither good nor evil, neither criminals nor policemen, but may be a wee bit of everything).
For those who know Marseille this book is essential. For those who don't, read the book, and i guarantee you will come and visit us!

3.0 out of 5 stars Foolish purchase 2 Jun 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Didn't realise that it was the French language original, not a translation! The rave English language review was not intentionally misleading - and I should have seen there was no translator. Bit dense for my limited French skills, even with a dictionary.
