Product Description

Product Description

This is the true story of a young boy's holiday. In May 1940 nine-year-old Bernard Moscardini and his mother set off from Bedlington, Northumberland for a summer holiday in the tiny mountain village of Sommocolonia in Northern Tuscany. Soon after their arrival Benito Mussolini declares war on Britain and France, and Bernard's mother frantically attempts to arrange passage back to their home in England but, by now, all the frontiers are closed. Thus begins the absorbing story of a child's life in wartime Italy and his daunting experiences when Sommocolonia becomes the front line during the German retreat from Italy in 1944. Through the eyes of a child, this is a tale of peaceful peasant life abruptly shattered by the rigours of war. It is also the story of a brave mother's determination to return, against all odds, safely back home to England with her two children.

A REALLY GOOD READ! 20 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
A lovely insight into Garfagnana hilltop village life from the eyes of a boy trapped there during the war years. Must have been character building for young Bernard, the author. A really nice read, especially if you know the area and family. Tonsils out without aneathestic..ouch!!!! Mark and Cheryl xx

My husband and I both LOVED this book. Bernard Moscardini shares a very special story and provides a new perspective on Tuscany. I think everyone should read this - it has universal appeal.

La Vacanza 25 Aug 2010
By Tyzz
Format:Paperback
Really enjoyed this true story. Easy reading and most enjoyable. A sense of the past through the eyes of a young boy. It brought a feeling of reality of World War Two and an outlining of the struggles families endured throughout that time in a little village in Tuscany, Northen Italy, linked to the North East of England via Italian family and relatives. Has elements of humour, sadness, intrigue, intensity and bravery of a family holiday in the Tuscany Mountains that lasted five years due the outbreak of war. Recommended read.
