By S. Bentley VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Enki Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy has been filmed as Immortal. The film and the comic aren't quite the same, so they act as interesting counterpoints to each other. The Nikopol Trilogy is a political satire, mixed with mythology, in a Blade Runner style future. It also reminds of the world of Judge Dredd in the way it uses violence and obviously uses people from popular culture as inspiration (in this case Elvis!). The basic story is that the god Horus possesses a bloke called Nikopol and enters into a bizarre love triangle in a corrupt and unsettled society.

Bilal's art is very good bordering on beautiful, clearly having an effect on artists who worked in 2000 AD in the late 80s and 1990s. However, one thing to note in this particular french language version is that it is reproduced in shades of grey, rather than the full colour of the original strip. To get the full colour work, you'd be better off buying the individual albums.

Hopefully at some point work like Bilal's will be readily available again in English to influence more writers and artists, but it's well worth brushing up on your French to check out the original work in this relatively cheap but sturdy paperback.

There's also an essay on the importance of the trilogy to enjoy.
