compelling, maddening early work 15 Jun 2006
By S. Kahn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
No one captures vertigo - that peculiarly French condition of existential boredom, nausea, and overwrought apathy - better than Modiano. The problem is that he doesn't like to write about anything else. The narrator of La Ronde de Nuit (at once suave and reserved with the character of a sleepwalker) is a double agent, working for the Nazi occupation forces in Paris and for the French Resistance. This situation poses endless possibilities but Modiano seems content to repeatedly emphasize the narrator's vertigo: his disgust with the collaborators' parties, his pity for the idealistic resistance, his namelessness - his identity is shaped only by the geographic terrain of Paris and at that only by the metro system. In La Ronde de Nuit the narrator slips too easily into his landscape, acts only as externals and ennui direct him to ask, which may be an apt description of wartime Paris but is literarily dull. Rue des Boutiques Obscures, Modiano's more polished and longer work, improves by allowing the likewise anonymous narrator to fight his way through the fog of war and amnesia and gain some identity through his struggles, if nothing else.
