Having seen some glowing reports of this guide, and having been impressed enough by a cursory inspection to buy it, I was somewhat disappointed with it in practice for three reasons. Firstly, the English translation of a German text was, frankly, meaningless in places. Where the walk was straightforward the description was generally sufficient, but where the walk required careful route finding we frequently got lost and spent considerable time looking for the way. Secondly, the inappropriate choice of landmarks and the paucity of detail given to some route descriptions led to confusion. Looking for "three pine trees" above "a large eucalyptus" on a forested hillside defeated us (walk 22), and we were occasionally left in doubt at some road junctions. This undoubtedly contributed to the slower walk times we achieved on some routes. Though not the fault of the writers, my last criticism is that this guide already appears to be out of date, since it does not mention any of the excellent signposts and other waymarks that now abound on La Palma. A revised edition that included these and tidied up the translation errors would, I feel, greatly improve the practicality of this guide. On the plus side it proved to be a very useful walk planner, with its good choice and variety of routes across the island, and in this respect I feel I got my money's worth.
