5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 31 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Arcturus is a strange blend of black/classic and techno metal, featuring members of Mayhem and the bizzare Ulver you can't expect anything less.
The whole album is like an unfolding story, the music itself takes strange turns and ventures into different genres within the same song, without losing focus or intensity. Garm (from Ulver) provides the strange theatre-esque vocals which are totally original and compelling.
A brilliantly diverse album which cannot be slotted neatly into any genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal's most innovative album to date 9 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Arcturus, in La Masquerade Infernale, proves that in order to be kickin' metal, you don't have to scream ALL the time. Blending the best of Classical Music with Techno with the Death Metal I love so much, their dark, inspiring lyrics are not only good in a time of crisis, but any time you need to calm down. But don't get me wrong: this album is one of the Heaviest and best I own. Probably one of the top 10 greatest metal albums of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lunatic psychotragic!!!!!!!! 15 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Actually, I can't believed no one has reviewed this record yet. It is simply one of the most important records of the recent years in the world of metal. True, it is a band of superstars, but this makes it flawless.
All the songs are incredible, Ad Astra is the proof that classical music and metal have a lot in common, and the whole stuff never stops until the last second. I've listened to it a million times and I still do. A real top-of-the-charts album, just for the cult.

I don't think it's as good as it's made out to be. Is ok but not exceptional or anything. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars The Chaotic Path. 10 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
'La Masquerade Infernale' is, to me, where the adventure all began for Norway's Arcturus. Of course, this wasn't the debut from the band, but it was where the style of the band, as a whole, radically began to change. In the beginning, 'Aspera Hiems Symfonia√Ę' showcased an avant-gard√© style mixed with a sufficient amount of symphonic overtones meshed together with a supremely different take on black metal than what the majority of us fans were used to back then. Black metal had it's set ways and Arcturus were here to tell a familiar story in a completely different light to what we had previously seen. 'La Masquerade Infernale', from the offset, is a radical change, as I stated already. Given the fact that there was only a year in between the first and second records, I'd imagine that the vast majority of listeners were surprised by the injection of avant-gard√© into the mix. Whilst, of course, the debut did include a fair amount of it already, the exploration in sound was taken to new levels at the point of release of this particular piece.

So, what's new? In a sense, everything. It really is a different take on a similar kind of music to the first. Whilst one could argue that the style of Arcturus was always a more avant-gardé sound, and that the structures of the songs were always as progressive as they are on 'La Masquerade Infernale', there is a generally different sound to it. The vocals have changed, for sure. No longer are we faced with black metal renditions from Garm, but instead, the clean vocals have completely stolen the show. Given the more symphonic sound of Arcturus, this is a positive. Whilst on the debut, the vocals did suit the sound, they wouldn't be as outstanding as they once were because of the progression of the band and the overall production of the album.
