January 2006. We have just returned from our third visit to the island, and can highly recommend this guide book. Its the best general guide to the lovely island of La Gomera that we have found. Amusing and gives you the information you need in a very readable format.. If you are visiting La Gomera dont leave without it !

This is the only guidebook that is specifically devoted to La Gomera. There are a couple of walking guides but, as far as general guidebooks are concerned, La Gomera usually has to compete for space with Tenerife or the Canary Islands as a whole (and it usually doesn't come out of the competition very well). The author, who is a former member of the well-known folk group, Steeleye Span, has lived on La Gomera since 1988. He clearly knows his subject and his great affection for the island comes through. The book is also illustrated with beautiful photos. If I have one gripe, it is that the book is short on practical information (accommodation, restaurants, timetables etc.). Because of this, some travellers may wish to pack another guide (e. g. Mini Rough Guide to Tenerife & La Gomera) and/or seek out this information on the internet. That said, the book is essential reading for anyone who wants to get to know La Gomera in depth. The author has done an excellent job.

The other reviewers have pretty much covered all the possibilities both positive and negative for this wonderful little book. I can only say I went there with somewhere to stay and eat so didn't notice the lack of advice on these subjects. What I did get was a feel for a person who knows and loves his adopted home. There is enough on the local history to make it user friendly and there is a shedload of information about touring the island by car or walking. The latter is really enhanced by picking out some lesser known paths and the provision of routes which are concise and can be followed (not something available in the other guides). And throughout there are touches of levity in the writing which I found really appealing; it never overwhelms or confuses the supply of information but is a thread for those who want to pick it up. Terrific book which I will pull from the shelf whether at home or on the island.
