Biography

Salif Keita came into the world both cursed and blessed. With each new ordeal, its salvation; with each new obstacle, some inspired ruse or unstinting strength to continue his path. And here lies the enigma. For example, how could he accept being disowned by a father who refused the inevitability of an albino son? What reply could he give to face the hostility of his own caste when he, a Keita,… Read more in Amazon's Salif Keita Store

Another brilliant acoustic album from Salif. The first track, La Difference, opens with some English vocals that seem a little obvious (I am black, my skin is white - I am white, my blood is black, I am what I am). For anyone who doesn't know, Salif is an albino. The musicians thoughout are wonderful and the instruments varied. Kante Manfila and Djelly Moussa Kouyate are on guitars. There's plenty of n'goni, camele n'goni, percussion and gorgeous backing singers - but also many surprises such as piano, trumpet, cello, oud, and on four tracks a six piece Arabic string section.
There's a stunning version of Seydou, with a vibraphone, floating chorus singers and the swaying string section, all led by the gently weaving guitar lines.
Gaffou has two n'goni's, oud and cello.
Folon appears in a different version with Bill Frisell on guitar and some subtle piano.
Ekolo d'Armour is a perky dance track with strings, piano and oud.
Djele has accordion, cello, balafon.
Samigna with it's two n'goni's, swirling strings and then trumpet is a wonderfully diverse sound.
The CD ends with a version of Papa, complete with breathy vocals, piano, and subtle bass from the camele n'goni and double bass.
Salif's voice is almost upstaged by the brilliantly diverse instruments!
Outstanding.

Salif Keita has matured into a fine composer and musician. His music now transcends pigeon-holing as "West African" or "ethnic" and takes its place amongst the very best of modern global music drawing from French-African griot, western jazz, deep original southern folk-blues and even European classical elements. The result is a rich, powerful fusion of driving, joyous rhythms overlaid with inventive melodies, driving vocal harmonies anchoring Salif's own unique, soulful voice producing a cocktail like nothing else on the scene. There are quiet, poignant numbers too, showcasing instrumental virtuosity. It's extraordinary.

The album's title "La Difference" is a reference to Keita's own albino genes and his championing of albinism in the African continent, where some superstition and prejudice still exists. At the same time, however, it's a general call for tolerance and "celebration of diversity" in a world where tribalism and ethnic prejudice still seems to govern the attitudes of many.

The whole album is superb. Particularly outstanding are "San Ka Na" "Sedou", "Ekolo d'Amour" (a fabulous 3-4 time rhythmic festival of joy which will have you dancing round the room), the poignant and soulful "Folon", "Djele" with its positively Oriental rhythmic underpinning and African vocal overlays, and the original and inventive "Samiga" complete with cellos, violins and a complex, subtle rhythm.

Salif certainly loves using minor keys to set the tone, and is comfortable singing in a number of West African languages and in French, slightly less so in English which he does not speak with any fluency.

This is a truly wonderful album, which rivals even Salif's masterpiece "Moffou." Even the 12-page booklet insert is a work of art, with beautiful and evocative monochrome photography which perfectly complements the music. Unconditionally recommended to all who appreciate quality, originality and excellence - and something a bit different.

He's a good live act too: the ensemble's headliner-performance on Saturday evening at WOMAD in July 2010 was as electrifying as anything ever seen on an outdoor stage. Catch them live if you have the chance.

My favourite album of 2010 was undoubtedly Salif Keita's La différence. Salif Keita's music is truly transcendental, largely driven by West African rhythms and dance beats, his soaring vocals and an Islamic spirit. However, the influence of North American blues, Afro-Cuban rhythms, soul and reggae can also be heard.
