Book Description

The son of a preacher man, Boone Coulter carries the guilt of his sins and the assurance of his damnation on his shoulders, yet still is set on revenge.

When Philadelphia-bred Elizabeth Dougherty breaks into the jail and holds him--a cold-blooded killer--at gunpoint, saying, "Take me with you,” she has no idea the sheriff who wants her dead is Coulter's old enemy and now has double the reason to track her down and kill her.

When Boone Coulter grudgingly agrees, he has no idea that this fiercely proper yet defiantly sensual Victorian woman will find the one vulnerable place in his heart and fan it to blazing life.

Their wild leap of desperation into the Texas wilderness launches a passionate tale of love and sacrifice, and becomes the stuff of legend...

The legend of La Desperada.

Set in the Texas and New Mexico of Billy the Kid.

[LA DESPERADA] is hands down the best love story I have ever read... with surprises that keep on coming. ~Melanie Mayron, Actress, Director, Writer

LA DESPERADA is phenomenal: characters, pacing, story, quality of writing–it has it all, hands down. Read this book. You’ll thank me. ~Toni McGee Causey, Author

This is the romance novel Joan Wilder (Romancing the Stone) wishes she'd written! Terri Edda Miller, Producer, CASTLE

Originally titled What Wild Ecstasy [Kensington Books], this tale inspired the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences/Nicholl Award-winning screenplay, "Redemption."

About the Author

PATRICIA BURROUGHS (Pooks) is a fifth-generation Texan who lives in Dallas with her husband, near her three sons and their families. Her earliest memories are of long afternoons spent soaking up the drama and laughter of the silver screen, and of long nights absorbing the magic of the written word—by flashlight. As a teenager, she sang, danced and acted in community theater productions. These influences, she believes, are the foundation of her lifelong ambition to write, to spin the dreams that ignite imaginations—to repay the debt to those who reached through the klieg lights, flashlights and footlights to touch a young girl’s heart. Find out more about Pooks, her books and other projects, and where she will be appearing at conferences, classes and readings, on her website: http://patriciaburroughs.com

Elizabeth thought she married for love and the chance to get out from under her family led her West. Her husband couldn't shake the demons and left her lonely and avoiding brother-in-law Clayton--the lawman with bad intentions. Luckily, she had her wits and when pushed, she made her escape. The plan, simple, break out Boone, the wanted man in jail, and have him get her away as fast as possible. Win-win. He wasn't so sure he wanted a lady slowing him down, but he grudgingly agreed to her plan.

On the run, they realize they need each other to survive various perils. He learned to respect her determination and strength and she learned he wasn't as bad as the reputation that followed him. Along this journey, they find love--real love--the kind that binds a couple on the run. The passion ignites and fuels the love and desire to find a safe haven. One man stands in their way--Clayton. Forced to become La Desperada alongside Boone, they devise a plan to bring him down and for the truth to come out, but Clayton foils their plan. I can't say anything more without spoiling the end.

This is not your grandma's love story of the Old West. This story is well-told in vivid detail that gives you a real feel for the time period. The women who went west were strong and determined and the story of Elizabeth is told as a true woman of the Old West. Survivor. The love story does get steamy and proves that you don't waste time on the run when you find someone. La Desperada doesn't disappoint.

The addition of the award-winning screenplay was a wonderful bonus.

Ms. Burroughs has a new fan! You will enjoy La Desperada, too!

A gentlewoman from Philadelphia, Elizabeth Dougherty, marries a man from Texas. She thinks she has met the love of her life, but reality is very different. Sheriff Dougherty, her nasty brother-in-law's threats add burden to her already difficult life. Her freedom hangs on the bargain she makes with Boone Coulter, a notorious gunslinger with a troubled past. The descriptions of the Texas and New Mexico landscapes are breathtaking and the characters leap off the page. The growth of Elizabeth from a sheltered gentlewoman to a woman of great strength and determination makes the story come alive, and the love between her and Coulter goes through some very difficult challenges as they face their tormentors. Sheriff Dougherty has a reason to want them both dead, and as Elizabeth discovers the truth about Coulter's past, she has to show him that their love is worth everything and their sacrifices worth nothing. A fast-paced, clever plot with lots of intriguing characters and a dialogue that places you right in the heart of Texas!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rattling good yarn 24 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This remarkable novel is so visual that it begs to be filmed. I'm not one who generally conjures pictures out of prose (a disability of sorts) so imagine my delight when La Desperada transported me to the Old West in full technicolor and with a story that just wouldn't let up. You want a criticism? Oh, very well. It's only that the adventure itself was enough to carry me along without the steaminess of the love interest. But that's just the tiniest niggle; there are those who would profoundly disagree with me. Having said that, make no mistake, this is no lightweight romance - it's a meaty, well-plotted, real-life story about flesh-and-blood people caught up in a scenario to which only bloody determination seems to offer a solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipe for a wonderful story.. 25 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ingredients:

2 Main Characters - Elizabeth and Boone, whose desperation and desire fairly leap off the page

4 Secondary Characters who are so well drawn that I cared about them and their well-being almost as much as the main protagonsits

2 Antagonists - One who is evil and twisted enough to be genuinely frightening, and the other who is ambiguous and intriguing

1 Plot that leaps out of the starting gate and doesn't slow down until the race is complete

Mix, season to taste (yes, the love scenes are steamy)

Serve with a bonus of an award-winning screenplay, based on the book.

And there you have it. A great story, with great characters. I'll be hunting for Ms Burroughs' other books!
